Like the chance of getting a out of tune perc sample would be like 5/12 since there are 5 tones that doesnt fit the regular scale :P
And not only that but you got to import a sample that has enough pitch to be recognized too.
In my experience though, it either fits or it doesnt. |
some tonal sounds are really important in house/tech-house/minimal house. those floor toms need to be really close in pitch to the basslines. |

An instrument can be playing any note of the scale and still be out of tune. Dissonant, discordant, and out of tune all mean different things. |

Dissonant just means an unresolved chord interval (according to mainstream music theory). In other words, not consonant, and something one would expect to be followed by consonance. It's not necessarily a bad thing, and indeed all non-trivial music is a combination of consonance and dissonance.
Discordance tends to mean that something sounds particularly harsh and unpleasant. An ill-conceived mix of notes or chords according to the listener; lacking harmony, so to speak. Arguably you could have a consonant chord that would still sound discordant if one or two of the notes were badly enough out of tune. The concepts are all interrelated but, again, are not actually synonyms in music terminology. |

| I tried tuning my percussion to match the other hats in harmony but when i move the pitch up to a semitone or so, it doesn't sound like a hat anymore and doesn't do its job which is to sound like a closed hi hat. It turns into something else. |

Tabla (ethnic percussion played in India/Pakistan/Afghanistan) is usually tuned to Sa (C), Re and sometimes Ni. And the tuning is matched to a sitar, sarod, haromnium, or a drone machine if practicing alone.
Tuning is done by hitting the straps that hold down the drum head with a hammer. To tune to higher pitch you hit from top down so that the straps stretch the skin of the drum head that they are laced to, and hitting from the bottom up to bring down the pitch. Its rather fun, and you usually can tune during performance or during the breaks in case there is loss of tune.

This video shows the different notes that can be accomplished by applying different types of pressure, sustain, release, velocity, and hand placement on the bass (bayan) and treble (dayan) drums. And what he pulls off in that video is sick. If you play Tabla like that you'll be done and tired doing those fast double time and tripple time rhythmic cycles within a minute and a half, you can see around the 3rd minute he starts to cramp a bit, and then resets himself and finds new adrenaline, and after that everything opens up and he can go on for a very longtime. |

Thanks for the helpful replies.
I was listening to the Murk remix of Moby's Porcelain, and I thought for a track like that you'd really need to know what you're doing with percs and tuning. I've also been listening to some minimal type stuff with mixes from Mickey Nightrain and DJ Misjah, where percs feature a lot and are often the main source of tone in the track. A lot of it's boring as hell but some of it's quite catchy IMO esp. MN's October 08 Promo mix. Here if you're interested.
So I started trying to make up some perc loops and that's when I came across these problems. I've been loading up a sine wave as a reference in a vsti, choosing a key and then building a perc loop from there. I'm hoping to make some kits in Guru that I know are in tune and work together.
I'll maybe still have a go at that but also take your advice and get a bassline grooving first, filter/eq to highlight/remove frequencies, and know when to give up and toss a sample!
orTofønChiLd I've had that too, sometimes I've went to tune a snare or something and even 1 semitone change just turns it into digital mush, strange.

| If your worried about the tuning of your percussion, any that may have some harmonics, you could also try running them through auto-tune if you have it. Auto-Tune you can throw any sound into it you want, and you could try to push it to a key you want, which is close. It might be time consuming to get it right, maybe not, I have not tried it, just thought of it. |
