I have never been to the Sullivan Room before.. but after becoming increasingly jaded with NYC's 'superclub' scene, I have been wanting to check out some other venues. Love, Rebel, Bunker and the Sully being the big ones. So imagine my surprise when one of my absolutely favorite DJs, Luke Fair, is playing at the Sully. I knew I had to go, since I just recently got into Luke's stuff and I had yet to see him play out, so I took 2 friends along with me - one of which who isn't much into dance music but enjoys going to shows, and another who is a fan of the music.
The trip from central LI to the city went absolutely smoothly, I drove in and made record time.. before hitting up the Sully, we stopped over at Heidelburg, a German restaurant uptown, for another friend's birthday celebration. It was really good if you are into German food, in case you're wondering :P Then, we drove all the way back down to the village, got to the club around 12:15. Waited on line for a bit, as the doormen were only letting in 3 or so people at a time, and we weren't on the guestlist.
Doormen were pretty nice and didn't give any of us trouble. Though I found it odd that none of us got patted down... I guess they have faith that the crowd wouldn't cause any problems. Walked downstairs into the main room. It was a fairly small, rectangular room, with a few lights on the wall and a wooden floor. Reminded me a bit of good ol' Arc, but not as big. The place wasn't overly crowded, and most of the people there looked into the music - ran into people wearing "Bedrock" and "Global Underground" shirts, no Guidos or scumbags. Not to mention for us single guys there were lots of pretty girls :)
One of the opening DJs was on, not really sure who he was, but he played some deep tech house and prog, some great music that I really liked. Not much for trainspotting, but I did recognize: Astrid Suryanto - Distant Bar (16-Bit Lolitas Mix). Around 1:15 or so, Luke Fair came on, wearing his trademark hat.
He IMMEDIATELY brought the funk.. recently the Luke Fair sets I've downloaded have been showcasing a more deep house side, but this was straight up house grooves. A bit of wah-wah guitars, bouncy beats, a bit of acid, it was pretty hard NOT to dance at this point... and the crowd agreed with that. After a lot of funk, him not slowing down for anything, he played a track that can best be described as a metallic, electro-proggy bassline, which slowed down to a crawl then sped back up, "French Kiss" style. Would love the name for the song...
After that, Luke started moving things in a deeper direction, doing a bit of a reverse from what I expected most DJs to do (play deep at first before going all-out)... Satoshi Fumi, Shur-I-Kan, Ben Watt type stuff... but the way he finished was absolutely stunning. Back to back, he played 2 of my favorite songs at the moment... Ian Pooley - My Kicks (Vincenzo and Lovebirds mix), and then finished it with Milton Jackson - Crash (Lovebirds mix), the song I was waiting all night to hear! An absolutely spectacular finish to a spectacular night... He wrapped up about 3:50 am or so.
After Crash came on, the resident DJ who was on earlier took over, mixing in some tougher sounding tech-house. At this time, we were getting tired and I had the long trip back to the Island to make, so we decided to head out.
All in all, I'm looking forward to the next show at Sully, since I can only assume this is what a typical crowd is like. And Luke Fair was absolutely incredible, this cements his place in my personal DJ top 5... can't wait to see him in Miami!
Also, if anyone else was there and could do any IDs, that would be much appreciated. Hopefully he'll put up a recording of the set too. |
