read my mind actually, you could make a great argument for him people just forget because he didn't have a long career. imo lemieux was the best or close to the best, much better than gretzky. although if talking talent he was by far the most talented guy to have ever played the game. gretzky although great was fortunate to have been surrounded by so many talented people and most importantly he was healthy.
if mario was healthy he would have broken all those records. between cancer, his back and his other injuries he still manged to be one of the best players to have played the game. he had it all, size (something like 6'2"), skated well, read the plays well and he really was a finness player. the clutch and grab hockey the devils played in the 90s something dulled players like lemieux but let us not forget his sheer awesomeness. clearly i'm biased though...hence the 66 in my screen name ;) |

Dude is def one of the BEST ever but he had a great defense plus the trap on his side.
My $.02 = Roy > Brodeur even though he is an asshat. |

rereading your reply from before, i have to set the record straight. as a new jersey devils fan, im sick of people not giving us the credit we deserve. we won 3 stanley cup championships in a matter of 6 years.
still, idiot rangers fans and loads of other people last year would say stuff like "without brodeur the devils are just a mid-table, satisfactory team." critics pound it into ours and other hockey fan's heads so much that we begin to believe it.
brodeur was out for 4 months and we proved that theory wrong.
now, brodeur is breaking NHL records and people are saying "no he's not the greatest, he was lucky he had an amazing defense in front of him." i'm not gunna buy that load of crap. stevens retired half a decade ago, as did daneyko. we haven't had a good defense since our last stanley cup win.
i'm not gunna stand aside and listen to people say he's good because of his defense, or the devils are only good because of brodeur. i have news for you. no goalie wins stanley cups or breaks records without a good team in front of him, so take that argument and throw it out the window. as a devils fan, i'm sick of people throwing our accomplishments down to the clearance rack.
brodeur proved last night he is now to be regarded as the best goalie of all time. he's breaking records, he's a good in new jersey, and well-respected all over the NHL. period. |

i understand where you are coming from but you can't deny he had a fantastic defense in front of him for a considerable amount of time. i'm not taking away that's he's fantastic at what he does because the facts are he has more wins than anyone ever. in the last fifteen years the two standout teams are the red wings and devils without a doubt. right now the devils are playing exciting hockey, they aren't the boring trap team they once were. people are always going to bring that up because they did it so well and had great success. yes the team has changed obviously they all do but my point is it is not just about stats. although biased i honestly don't think he's the best. until he does something to revolutionize the game i will always see him as a great goalie who excelled at playing the game as it is.
also, if you ask non-biased parties (excludes the two of us) brodecur woud not be the overwhelming. honestly i think most would say roy but there are going to be a good chunk of people who would toss out a name like dominic hasek. despite my absolute disdain for his style he was incredible. basically what i'm saying is with these records or not he isn't the clear cut best goalie of all time. yes he'll have the wins but are numbers pure indicators of who is or is not the best? i think that's too simple of a way to view things. how about someone like tretiak? he played on the red army team in the 70s but i don't think he ever played in the nhl although he is considered one of the best goalies to have ever played the game. just because someone like carey price has more wins in the nhl than he does doesn't make him better. don't get solely wrapped up in numbers.
also, broducer did play with a superior defense for many years you can't deny that because that's a fact. i wasn't saying he's always had a top defense but for a good chunk of his career he has. roy's defenses were not to the same level of effectiveness. i don't want to take away from brodeur's accomplishment but i don't like hearing "he broke 551 therefore he's the best." i hope brodeur continues playing for a long time and gets past 600 but he's gotta do more in my opinon to be considered the best ever. |

| Dont forget they changed the rules due to Marty also, his puck skills are the best ever, hence why we see the red lines behind the goal net. |

AMEN to that.. I just dont even get involved with these conversations anymore. People just dont have a clue and its a waste of my time and effort to fight people over it. In the end its normally only Ranger fans mostly that refuse to admit their team sucks and will always suck. Its jelousy in the end. Big bad NEW YORK RANGERS HAHAHAHAHHA are u kidding me what do they have one cup in like 70 years LMAO.. okkkkkkkkkkk |

You have to look at numbers..over and over again he puts those numbers up. You cant be great if ur not consistant. Marty has been nothing but consistant his entire career. OVER AND OVER OVER again and again he piles on the wins, the saves, the shut outs, the rings, gold medals, awards. Its not just about winning that makes him the best. Its the fact that he excels at every spot as a goalie and will surpass every goalie in every stat at some point is what makes him the best. His ability to change the flow of a game or how he gets in every teams head is what makes him the real deal. I dont see to many teams worried about playing rick depietro when they go to the island. Teams fear having to play against Marty.
Jerry Rice in football holds every wide receiver stat there is and he is the best of all time there is no doubt about it. Yes there are a few others that were amazing but Like Marty and Jerry they both excelled alittle more which took them to that next level. Marty is a goalie that was able to adapt and take in many diffrent styles and make his own style of playing. Im sorry but i love hockey and i love Patrick Roy and i would be the first to give any player their honors when deserving, fan or not of the team i just love the sport, i think he at one point along with Hasek you can def make a case for were the best but like any sport at some point you have to take a back seat for that one person that in the end was just out right better at the position than they were. Yes Roy was amazing but broduer is better i dont understand why thats such an issue. Their is always someone better out there at some point. Cant stay the champ forever. It dont work like that. Its not a matter of he said she said. Its facts and Marty proves it every year. |
