many forums require you do posts before you're able to start a topic. and it could be user approved, just like ebay or some others. Original Poster could simply give a "satisfactory" or "unsatisfactory" to the reply and that user would get credited. Once that user receives 4 credits he can make his own thread. pretty simple really. |

Maybe you just aren't very good. and no one wants to hurt your feelings? That was the case with me when i first started to produce. People don't want to be s a lot of times and just prefer to be quiet rather than hurt your feelings. |

This had crossed my mind but generally people are comlimentary just say this is wrong or whatever. Thank you though for saying that makes me feel all warm inside :) |

So people create sock puppet accounts and approve their own comments. Or find a different way to game the system.
Whenever you create a rule or measurement that almost but not quite defines the behaviour you really want, people will find ways to maximize that particular measurement, usually at the expense of some other critical element that you failed to consider.
It's really not simple, and most forums that take this approach only succeed in getting fewer users - not necessarily more active or helpful ones. When you tell somebody that they have to jump through a whole bunch of hoops in order to be accepted into your little cabal, the most likely response is going to be a big -you.
If it were anywhere near as clear-cut as you're making it out to be, we'd have perfect communities and corporations everywhere. The reality is, people are human, some people are s, and some things you just can't measure. |

well thats fine with me. i'd rather have 50 people that care than 25,000 that don't. the reality is most people on here probably already have 5-10 friends on AIM/email they send their ideas to for critiques, this forum would be nice if you could branch outside those friends for a different perspective. i'm all for weeding out the people that don't care digi, and every system gets beat... doesn't mean you give up on ideas or take steps to make things better. |

I've never had problems getting feedback there. I don't think you're doing it right. |

The "critique other tracks and people will critique yours" thing works, but you have to find the right people to exchange comments with. Some folks really are in there just for self-promotion, and if I've never seen someone post there before, I'll check their recent posts to see if they've made comments on other tracks or only posted in their own threads. If they've only been self-whoring, then I probably won't give them any comments. I tend to comment most on tracks by people who are "regulars" in the promo forum, and they're usually good about giving me comments in return. |

We could probably have a thread in which we regulary give eachother comments and critique, for the group of people that come here often. Just like a little sharing community for the regulars here. I think it would make this forum more fun, since we all know the actual promotion forum is a wasteland. I can only imagine putting music up there makes you feel a bit more empty at the end of the day, even though many post music there for some sort of fulfillment. |

It's a wasteland because people think like you. Maybe if everyone here started visiting it regularily it would do what it's supposed to do. After all, the production and promotion forums should be pretty much linked to each other and not enemies. |

Elaborate.
And why would anyone visit it regularly and give random people critique, when we can be giving people we interact with regularly critique? Time is of some essence, the reason I spend time here is because I can actually learn something from someone, or share something with someone that I might know, even people I disagree with. And when I've given critique there, I really don't even know if its actually being used, or some dude is just looking for a quick hit of attention. Since you brought it up, actually if more people actually did think like me, that place would be filled with thoughtful and useful critiques of music, its obvious they think like you, going by the high consistency of negative posts you make. |

People won't go there because they think nobody else goes there. And then they start threads in the wrong forums because "nobody checks that forum anyway", even though in reality they would if someone actually posted something there.

Because we don't want to be inbred?
If you only comment on the people you know/like you'll be forming a clique which usually descends into patting each other in the back without actually getting anything useful in return. And - again - you'd be alienating the correct forum even more.
I've found people I don't know tend to give much more honest feedback - they're not afraid I might give them retaliatory feedback on something else.

Please elaborate, I have no idea what your point is here.
If people thought like you nobody would post there because you want to post everything here.... ? |

We dont do much patting on the back here, actually many here are often at eachothers neck, so I doubt there would be much cliquiing or back patting, well there is a back patting clique here (ktphillips, echossytem, mok, and friends) but I think the music critique will be kept realistic. Maybe if that forum name was changed from "promotion" to "critique" then psychologically people will realise its a place more importantly for giving and receiving critique, than for promotion. |
