What that basicly does is 'pretending' that a sound is panned while it is actually delayed with a couple of miliseconds to one side, so your brain it's panned to that one side. It's a great effect though! But I think what I ment is what Storyteller said, that mid-side mixing, I've actually taking half of the day of from work to work that out ;)..

Ah nah, I'm not talking about the panning effect. Although, I checked out mid-side mixing and if I understand correctly, it's in the same idea as applying the small delay since it's related to the signals that are in/out of phase.

No

yes.

It's about applying different processing to only the 'mid' or the 'side', side being the one which more or less has all sound that is out of phase between left and right. This way you can dramatically emphasize the stereo feel of specific sounds or the entire mix, because you're only processing the stereo data if you process the 'side' channel.

Ohhh I see now. :)

And a great thing about M/S mixing (if I'm correct matthijs ;) ), is that the side signal phases itself out when played on a mono system..

yep :)

for ableton users, don't forget the "utility" plugin.

Was thinking about how to get a wide effect, what do you think of this:

Create a synth riff with either one osc panned L&R at about 25% or duplicate the riff and pan to the same amount. Have each side slightly different e.g. adjust the PWM slightly, this will create some separation.

Then have each sound sending to a panned reverb that is slighty diff on each side (EQ or pre-delay etc), and panned to 50%. Probably want to run both panned lines through a centered short plate delay to give it a glued feel.

My PC isn't setup as moving, so cant check this. Would it work?

Thanks for that! Good read.

this m/s mixing is new ground for me..can someone give a good explanation as to how to do it so i can go experimenting..i have cubase and all waves plugins..does waves stereo imager automatically sort out the phasing when you widen the signal??

cheers

That SOS article was a great read! Ok trying to get my head around this mid/side mixing, heres how I think it could be done, tell me if I'm wrong:

start with a stereo signal (M), inverse one of the channels and bounce down a mono track (I would expect this to sound very phased)(L), then make a copy of that and inverse that copy (R). Throw the three together with respective panning for M R and L, and let the coupled gain of L + R be the "wet" control... sound about right?

Actually, I just tried it to see how it would go and ended with some delays after bouncing that I couldn't correct, the complex sound and delay fx in the source along with the phasing wasn't making it any easier. I wont be doing that again.
