Virus TI and Live 7: How do YOU render your tracks?

So, I've finally finished a draft of the first tune I've built using the Virus TI Snow. I went to render the tune as per usual (i.e., export as wave) but of course that didn't work because the Virus does not support offline rendering (the resulting wave was the complete song minus all the sounds coming from the Virus). I'm wondering what you guys believe are the most effective and efficient approaches to rendering a completed track.

The simplest technique I can think of would be to create three new audio channels (since I have the Virus playing three separate sounds) and set the three channels to record each of the three Virus sounds. This particular tune makes use of a number of return channels as well so I guess I will have to do the same thing and create a few audio channels to record the outputs of the return channels. Then, once all the new waves have been created and are available on their own channels, I will turn off (mute) the Virus and return channels and render the entire track as I normally would. I can't test this out at the moment but I think it'll work.

How do you guys typically render your work in Live 7 when using the TI?

Thanks in advance.*

Hey Nick,

Yes that is what I personally do. I have just recently started using the TI in Live though, so there might be a better solution that I haven't heard of yet :)

However I did spend some time searching on the Ableton forums and most people seem to be using that method !

def not what i do. i keep the virus as midi as long as possible (well that is if i'm using extensive automation). when i'm satisfied and i know the sound won't chnge anymore i create a new audio track and select "resample". i solo the midi & audio channel, i make sure "SOLO IN PLACE" is checked in options and whatever u have ur sound bus'd to, effects on returns whatever, it will record it in ur audio channel for u. i then just turn off the audio channel that was originally recieving the virus signal.

def been the best way for me to work, this didn't make me "reroute" or change any kind of automation.

Hi mate,

I tend to use many TI parts, sometimes as much as 5-6 in one track. I will spread these out across the 3 available usb outputs. Obviously some parts will share the same usb output. The 3 usb outputs are sent to 3 audio tracks. If one of my parts requires additional FX outside what the Virus can offer, then I make sure that part does not share its usbout with any other part. That way I can drop FX on the one audio track and it will only affect that one part.

When I am finally at a stage where I feel I am unlikely to alter the sound or automation, then one by one I record each part in real time. I do this by turning off all the other midi tracks, arming the appropriate audio track and hit record. When its done, I create a new audio track and move the recorded audio to that track. I repeat this process for all other parts.

Its important to record one part at a time, even if they dont share the same audio out as you want to insure the virus is not dropping any notes or giving any clicks from playing numerous parts together.

If you are making use of the returns in ableton on certain parts, rather than render the return tracks as well, I would do this:

Record the part as mentioned above with all the sends knobs turned off. Once you've recorded and placed it on its own audio track, use the send knobs on that track. That way, you dont need to render the returns. So essentially, record your virus parts without any other FX than the virus itself and then add FX, sends etc to the recorded audio.

A long-winded post but I hope it makes sense ;)

Thanks for the replies guys! I appreciate the responses.

Yep, this is what I intend to do. Earlier today I rendered the parts without the send FX; when I get the time, I'll setup the sends and their automation on the newly rendered waves and then export the entire track as I usually would.

I'll post the tune in the music producers forum some time soon.

Thanks again :)

I also have VIRUS TI, the Keyboard edition, but I solved that problem just playing all the Midi channels I want into my track. Then, I export each midi track in SOLO to .wav format and re-upload the wav tracks into my sequencer (cubase). (Of course I first work on each midi track in every automatin with lot of accuracy, so that the wav file would be the definitive track, with no other automation to be added on)

So now cubase recognise Wav format and not Virus TI, so it's ready to export all the tracks.

Another important thing on cubase is to tick the "REALTIME EXPORT" option I have in the Mixdown screen. Don't know what's the equivalent function in Ableton or Logic but here u are how I skipped that problem. :)

I just tried this method and it worked perfectly. You're right: it is a very quick and simple approach; and it sounds perfect. Thanks for the explanation :)

Just a note: I'm in a rush so I may have missed something but it seems to me that I have to set the master channel to 0dB; otherwise the volume on the resampling channel basically becomes the volume of the Virus channel minus the volume of the master (e.g. if Virus = -7dB and master = -5dB, then the resampling channel becomes -12dB).
