Pete Tong and Deadmau5 at Bar Rio Houston and other ramblings

That was a fun party! I got there around 11ish, and the dance floor was disappointingly empty. After I had a few drinks, seemed like everyone was following that trend and more people started dancing. When Pete Tong came on, seemed like the perfect sized crowd.
I liked Pete Tong WAY more than Deadmau5...I think Pete Tong's set was the first I had heard in a while that had a great mix of progressive house sounding melodic tunes that have a wicked bassline. Sort of reminded me of Hernan's set when he came.
I like Deadmau5' productions, but as a DJ, I wasn't a big fan....I don't know though, seems like DJs nowadays are on this trend of playing this unmelodic, hard bass hitting songs with techno sounding bleeps and blurps that build up to nowhere. Don't mean to sound too harsh, but the past few parties I went to, I've been sufficiently bored with the music, even though I LOVE the CD releases around the same time by the same artists (Above and Beyond, Ferry Corsten, Armin).
Am I crazy? Has anyone else felt that?
Like Deadmau5, I don't think there was a single song that I was really getting into (despite the six long islands), yet could name plenty of songs that I really wanted to hear (Alone with you, Faxing berlin, Not exactly, Fifths, longest road, tiny dancer)...but the style of what he was playing, I could see it wasn't coming, so eventually I just got bored and left early...another thing I have noticed myself doing more and more often (when normally I stay until lights turn on).
I don't know, maybe it's just me...for some reason I enjoy the CD releases and productions and various recorded live sets MUCH more than actual concerts by these guys...
Anyway, uploaded some videos of some great tracks pete tong played...if you know any of them, let me know!

i don't know much about deadmau5, but the majority of the reviews i've read about seeing him live have been disappointing.
pete tong on the other hand, is straight up AWESOME. unfortunately i've never had the chance to catch him live, but i have heard many a live set from him, and they are almost always slammin'... track selection, mixing, general energy.
i think tong is a total bad ass. i wish he would come to atlanta. i would be more excited to see him than i am to see armin next week. (although i should say that i am excited to see armin) |

Compared to Deadmau5, definitely seemed that good. Although i'm exagerating just a little...hernan's set was epic |

Yeah Hernans set was insane. Hope he comes back to the houston area soon. Hopefully this year. |

Yo jbd,
Thanks for the review mang. I too have noticed that artists (deadmau5 in your experiance) play stuff some different than what they produce. Tbh, I think its part of some lame trend that started with peeps like tocadisco (in your refrence of edm tracks that have build ups that seem to lead to nowhere). Then deadmau5 comes along and gets a his green teeth sunk into it and s all over a trend that was once interesting/amusing.
As for pete tong, I knew that he would throw down a fine set even though I didn't attend. That guy has got to be the most diverse dj on the face of this planet due to his environment @ the bbc!
Glad you had fun and next time pete is in town ill def gonna make the extra effort to come see him.
Btw I love less crowded dance floors to underground big names like pete. Leaves more room for the saavy. |
