Glad someone was able to say it for me. That post was the biggest load of horse I've ever had the displeasure of reading.
To the original poster; good for you. It's nice to see someone making a conscious effort to stop speaking like a complete retard. Only 299,999,999 people to go... |

I'd say it would be optimal for you to live in the UK for a while in order to adopt the culture and dialect as you pointed out, specially If you haven't been exposed to said culture in the past. |
Nobody in the UK actually speaks RP naturally. RP is, as the name implies, recieved. It's something the upper classes are taught at school and is an entirely artificial dialect. Unless you were educated at a good British school, living in the UK is not going to improve your RP at all.
Recieved Pronunciation is inherently fake, and was designed to make people sound like they have status. You're never going to sound naturally English by speaking it. |

I'm actually reading Bill Bryson's Mother Tongue at the moment, it's a pretty fascinating insight into the history and contemporary aspects of the English language, bar a few incorrect facts (i.e that we spell it "labor" in Australia).
What I found particularly interesting is that the "long" a sound that some people use for words like "dance" (daance), "plant" and "trance" is a fairly recent phenomenon originally adopted by upper class wanting to distinguish themselves from the proletariat.
It's funny because the exact same thing is happening here in Australia now. Twenty years ago very few people used the long a, but a lot of people have since adopted it. I tend not to because I work in the building industry and sounding like a wanker just alienates you from everyone (and because I also don't want to sound like a toss), but my sister works in horse racing and picked it up a few years ago. She now denies that she's ever said them as short. |

Wow, why the hell are you doing that? American English is so much more evolved and (largely) universal.. You are reverting back to a primitive form of english my man. There are dozens of weird dialects in Europe..none commonly embraced. If you speak with the basic American accent (no hillbilly, new york, or cajun intonations) you will be understood and respected worldwide. People in China and India aren't studying how to speak like the British.. They are studying how to speak like Americans. The world is moving away from from the old english style.. Even British singers sing like Americans these days. You've really been wasting your time. |
Would you consider wasting 7 years of your life burning CDs & DVDs in an attempt at 'archiving' all of your (mostly downloaded pirated) data due to fear of hard drive crash an even bigger waste of time? That's what I realised in 2008 & turned 23 feeling very empty about my previous years that should've been spent enjoying them instead of burning stuff & studying the CD/DVD FAQs & HydrogenAudio then becoming obsessed with getting perfect lossless copies of stuff. We're on Earth only a limited amount of time. You obviously don't get it back and wasting it like this is just terrible. My knowledge will be/is obsolete.
I believe the fake accent is a simply a symptom of my AS and a desire to be different from others around me. Besides, the 'dangerous' thing is now after 8 years of it, I am used to saying about half my vocabulary in RP-style so now switching back to saying everything one way just feels weird. Not only that but there are a number of people that only know of me speaking the 'new way'.
Actually what the heck. Does this subject even matter? Shouldn't one have the freedom to choose how they wish to speak or write, etc.? |

You were raised in America, you still live in America and you're trying to adopt British English as both a language and writing style...yet you type like a Nigerian. How did that happen? |
