quality of computer speakers vs monitors

whenever i play my tracks through my monitors, they typically sound pretty damn clear, but when i play them through normal computer speakers w/ a small sub, they get a sort of "faded" type of sound lose some high end clarity.
this faded sound doesn't occur on professional tracks though and when i play my tracks and professional tracks back to back through monitors, they sound pretty damn close to one another in quality.
any reasons why/what may be going on here? |

If your listening to an unmastered track, some of the clarity and image isn't heard clearly on computer speakers. Also, once you get it mastered it will get some hi end clarity, especially if they add some eq to the hi freq's to bring them out during mastering. Recently got something mastered, and the original bounce sounds a bit dry, but after the master everything pops out and the hi freq's are shining bright. What im saying here is given that you mixed well, your track probably sounds similar to what every other track sounds prior to master as far as hi end clarity. |

I don't think that's entirely true though. Lot's of people also have cheapass PC speaker in the studio to make sure it sound good on them as well. It's the art of making your track sound good anywhere, that's why there's all this fuss about the Yamaha NS10's, if you can mix decently on them, it seems that your track sounds great everywhere.
I don't think you should solemnly trust those PC speakers, just use them as a reference, if your track sounds good on it, nice, if not, don't go around making big changes to your track.
Mastering can solve some problems, but the source (your track) has to sound good as well! Use several references (pc speakers, HiFi installation, Car radio etc) to listen if your track sounds okay on those systems. |
