Samples vs. Synths

For Example: Trying to make a simple bell sound with some additive waves... sounds OK, but not like very similar sounding bell and chromatic drum sounds out of a sampler.
When making a similar percussive or short decay type sound (perhaps not sustained) as found in a sampler... go with a more genuine sounding sample, or make the synth?
I assume samples all come stocked well mixed and mastered so they sound as good as they ever could. But even with simple sounds, I feel like I should at least try and make synth analogues. |

| Do what sounds good, whether synth or sample. There is no right or wrong about where you source your sounds from, its up to whether it sounds good or not. |

| Maybe you can try and layer them, than you'll have your own sound ;) |
