The Dying Star [Epic/Full-On Trance with a twist] (160 kbs) [version 2 {revisions}]

I basically had to write the track in three parts: I wrote the climax first, then I wrote the breakdown independently and rendered it into the final mix. Then I wrote the introduction and tail. In essence, it was kind of like building a railroad in three different states (or provinces) and shipping them all to be assembled in an entirely different state (province). This track was both pain and pleasure to write and that's one of the reasons why I want to leave trance until I get a better computer.
The breakdown is NOT DJ friendly. In fact, my pathetic songwriting process keeps my melodies from being tidy at all.
Without further ado:

The Dying Star_2_.mp3 - 9.33MB
-----------------
Genre: melodic/full-on trance.
BPM: 142
Length: 6:47
Progress: Mostly completed (It's a draft, I guess. Any comments are welcome.)
MP3 Quality: 192 kbs.
Sequencer: FL Studio 8
UNMASTERED (nothing touched the master bus) If it's too quiet, turn it up.
The Story behind the production:
It too far too long to complete, sadly. It was the bassline that made this track, really. The bassline was like an acid vile threatening to spill itself inside my cerebellum if I didn't comply and place it in a finished track.
The full-on bassline itself a the cumulation of seven synthesizers:
- 5 3xOSCs mid-and-high frequencies.
- 1 Vanguard - Low frequencies that later became mid-frequencies after E-Q and multiband compression.
- 2 V-Stations - the Sub and Floor bass.
Getting the right kick drum is also a pain in the ass (time consuming). Here is what I did:
1. I got a harder-sounding kick and band-passed it.
2. I layered it over a high-hat sample and an acoustic kick-drum for gritty flavor.
3. I then gave it the tail of a 909 sample and pitch-bent it appropriately. This gave the kick is depth that thunders in the mix.
The Story behind the song:
I didn't simply want this to be a trance song, I wanted it to tell something of a story. Imagine if a star was terminally near supernova and off in the distance you were there to witness it's final throes. The sad emotions of the breakdown are designed to illuminate the final hours of the celestial sphere's beauty before hell is unleashed and quenches any and all things in reach. Consider characters who ponder the losses in what is to come. Maybe the loss is a homeworld, bases of operation, fellow warriors, enemies, accomplishments, or maybe even love. Are you prepared to escape the spiraling nebula of the cataclysm?
The climax represents the fiery nebula in a rather cinematic, stylish, sci-fi escape from hell-fire. |

You guys are killing me. In the 30+ views and no comments time-span, I have already injected new additions in this mix. I hope you enjoy it more-so since these change-ups (there will be more to come).
Signed,
Sir-Spammelot
PS - Yes, I know I could have simply hit "edit"... but this was more fun. |

I like the ideas you have.
It sounds like you fiddled around with the EQ and just forgot to change some of the settings because overall the track is lacking punching mids and the kick sounds weak despite what you said in the description.
I don't know, what do you think? |

I think that you are right. Other than a few instruments, there is virtually no punchiness to the track at all... and those instruments that are punchy are not mixed with good priority.
... so much to do... so little time. |

I think the kick you used was just an intro kick but like Beatflux said it sounded very weak.
I really like the track, very chill, and yet there was a build up
I actually was imaging this on an episode of Samurai X, could work out ;)
Here... I'm attaching a kick which would work out better :p

You are all going to laugh at me now, but that kick REALLY opens up the mix. Everything else feels muffled when I place that kick in there. My homebrew SUCKS! Now I need to re-work everything else so that it follows the new kick's example -- the damn sample is like a new angry conductor.
In spite of the fact that this causes me to "have my work cut-out for me" a big THANK YOU for helpful quality control! |
