Can any girls help me interpret what happened?
I'd like to hear some female opinions on a situation that happened to me a few days ago.
I was in a Starbucks, getting some coffee, and as I was waiting in line, I noticed two girls in front of me who, to my surprise, were talking in my native language. I was a bit intrigued and wanted to let them know I was their compatriot, but there were a lot of people in line and I felt a bit uncomfortable.
Then, when we finally reached the end of the line, most people had left, and the only ones in the store were me, them, and the girl behind the counter taking their order. So I chose a small pause in their conversation and said to them in our native language, "Hi, are you girls from X?" (the country that I and, presumably, they were from).
Now to my shock and dismay, an awkward pause ensued in which these girls didn't even so much as look at me out of the corner of their eye, in fact nothing about them changed AT ALL, not even a hint of any reaction or acknowledgment that they'd heard anything whatsoever, let alone anything in their native language. The girl behind the counter obviously didn't understand what I'd said, because it wasn't in English, so I was left looking like an idiot who just pronounced some random collection of sounds and didn't get any response.
Now there can be no doubt that these girls spoke my language and were from the same country as me. Nor can there be any doubt that they heard what I said -- it was fairly loud and obviously directed at them. Indeed, even if my assumption was a mistake (impossible), any normal person would have looked at me and expressed surprise at what I had said, especially since it was very silent in the store, and we were standing next to each other.
Rather, there seemed to be some kind of a fascinating "agreement" between these girls to react to me in a certain way, because they BOTH ignored me in the most blatant way possible (otherwise at least one of them would have done something; it wouldn't have been as "synchronized"). They just kept looking at the counter, got their drinks, and left. But how could there be any "agreement" if, prior to me saying anything, they didn't even know who I was, what my intentions were, or whether I would say anything at all?
So, the only explanation I can think of -- that of a pre-planned decision to ignore me -- must be ruled out.
The trouble is, I'm not sure what to suggest in its place. Anyone would have at least acknowledged with some interest a person from the same background as them, or at least something in the demeanor of the person would have changed. I am sure there was some kind of male/female dynamic going on, but I was stunned at how well-synchronized, and totally non-existent, the reaction was.
So, can the females here offer any insights?

LOL... I'd love to see something like that happen in a store. That would be hilarious. However, it is kind of weird... if I were in a foreign land where not many people spoke English, and someone said something to me in English I'd be happy to talk to them.

What am I saying this guy has to be one of the ugliest mother******s known to man!
I mean come on he responded to them in their NATIVE LANGUAGE (which almost always elicits a reaction from the other party).
And they were teens yes, but in college and from abroad, so they are OBVIOUSLY open to new things and meeting new people.
I think they caught a glimpse of you on the way in and couldn't bring themselves to turn around, lest they fix their eyes on your ugly mug once more.

Good guess, but false. The Starbucks was in a University area, and they were quite obviously "international students" or A1-Visa students or whatever. They were even dressed in a European way. So, at least 18, my friend.
