Wouldn't everyone turning off their lights cause the power genereation grib to have to throttle back on energy production? Then, when everyone turns their lights on they have to give it full beans to copy with the surge in demand?

Wouldn't this fluctuation cancel out any benefit?

It's like driving your car at a constant RPM instead of stop-n-go

This is rediculous. Like it's going to make a difference. :stongue:

All it will do is make the price of electricity more likely to go up. Case in point: here in NC we weren't allowed to use water during a drought last year at certain times. What happened? The cities couldn't collect as much tax revanue with the water being used less, and they raised the taxes on people to make up the difference.

GO AWAY HOLLYWOOD ACTIVISTS

bull's eye.

They are not asking you to turn off every piece of electric equipment. It's just the lights. Typically a combined effect would probably cause a 5-10% dip in electricity demand. A surge of that much demand after one hour, would probably not have any adverse consequence on the power distribution system. Besides, the electric companies themselves are actively promoting this stuff. Here. They know better than us, what this will do to their systems.

In many countries, there's actually a deficit of power. The demand outstrips supply considerably. Routinely local governments resort to "load shedding" where the power is deliberately switched off for extended periods of time during "peak demand" hours. So as I see it, Earth Hour has its benefits. Aside from conserving that small fraction of energy, it definitely is a powerful way of raising awareness about the energy crisis this world is facing. This awareness will make people support various other activities that will eventually make a substantial difference.

Awareness for what exactly?
