For the sake of originality, here's a list of my favorite indie films, as most of my big Hollywood favs have already been identified. Would love to know if any other TA's have caught some of these gems:
In the Valley of Elah
Things to do in Denver When You're Dead
Power of One
Rabbit Proof Fence
25th Hour
In the Company of Men
Owning Mahowny
The Counterfeiters
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Strange Days
Other, more well-known classics that have yet to be mentioned:
Contact
Good Will Hunting
Dead Poet's Society
The Professional
Born on the Fourth of July
The Doors
JFK
Wall Street
Dances With Wolves |

coming up with a top 10 list is so damn hard for me. I tried to keep these picks more conventional, otherwise it would have been all horror movies, surfing documentaries and 80's teen comedies.
1. Last Of The Mohicans
2. Empire of the Sun
3. The Shawshank Redemption
4. Terminator
5. Step Into Liquid
6. The Great Escape
7. Big Trouble in Little China
8. Vision Quest
9. Fright Night
10. American Psycho
Honorable mention
Rounders
Three O’clock High
Riding Giants
Rad
Escape From New York
Stephen King’s 'It' (the first half)
The Departed
Primer
Roger Dodger
Army Of Darkness |
Wow, Roger Dodger is an amazing call -- not sure how that one flew so far under the radar, but Campbell Scott just kills it in that film. |

Yeah, just saw it again recently myself -- and I couldn't agree more that Ed Norton is in a league of his own...
On a related note, when I was living in NYC, I used to spend quite a bit of time in Carl Schurz Park (Upper East Side), where the opening scene is shot (Ed Norton - and his dog -- are approached by a regular addict), as well as one of the final scenes, in which Norton gets beats up. If you haven't been there (main entrance at roughly 85th / York), it's quite a beautiful park, with a great view of the East River / Roosevelt Island. |

I also really like this movie but for two reasons Ed Norton and more importantly Philip Seymour Hoffman. He is so awkward and borderline creepy in every single one of his films, I love it. Such a good actor!
Owning Mahoney is another great one and I don't know how I forgot to mention The Professional on my list!
I also forgot to mention Election as another one of my favorites! |

How can we talk about this film and not mention spike lee?? He made the club scene en phenomenal. When Hoffman comes out of the bathroom after hooking up with his student and i looks like he is just floating. |

Yeah, the Strange Days with Ralph Fiennes. Perhaps, a bizarre choice - but I remember being mesmerized by the film when I first saw it.
Phillip Seymour Hoffmann is always amazing -- just saw him again in Charlie Wilson's War, and he was the highlight of the film for me.
And, likewise -- 25th Hour was also my favorite Spike Lee Joint ;) |
