You have to pay for jailbreak updates? I thought the point of a jailbreak was to NOT pay.

no...for the new official apple 3.0os update you have to pay. as an iphone user, i get it for free, but ipod users have to pay. jailbreaking is free. so, just let me know when and it'll probably take about 15 minutes or so and you'll be good to go.
