Hey guys.

Just finished up a pretty close to final mix on a new track called "Moogology". It's my first attempt at something using the minimoog plug in, and I'm happy with how it came out.

It's available for free as a download for anyone who digs it, as are all 10 tracks I have up.

You can check it out at :

Thanks in advance!

Nice, full kick.

Hats seem a little harsh but I remember you like things a little bright.

Like the synth coming in on the mini-break.

Okay - everything that's come in is over-powering the kick. I can still hear the kick attack, but it's completely drown out, otherwise.

Are you using a compressor/limiter on the master?

Really cool rebuild.

I love the pizzicato synth coming in. (Did you rip off the idea from my remix of "Adagio for Strings"? I just posted that yesterday. ;) )

The tune has a lot of good ideas but it sounds sparse. I think it could be developed a bit more, but it sounds like all of the lead parts are there.

Once the parts resolve, the kick comes back, a little. Could be a compressor issue - I thought the rhythm section was coming in a little hot.

I absolutely love the sonic signature you're cultivating. It's very unique. I think it needs to be tamed, a little, but only so that the rest of the song can be heard. It's something you'll master over time, as you finesse your mixes, you'll be able to cultivate each mix to attune it to the sound you're looking for without losing the sum of the tracks.

Apart from the mix, good job, but I'm looking forward to a finished product.

As usual, awesome critique Eddie. I'm having a lot of difficulty actually with the kick presence in the mix. I have a compressor on the master, but it isn't on strong - I think perhaps part of the issue is the fact that my overall mix levels are coming in too hot. Thats a common problem for me; part of the trouble is I get the mix set up and then go "oh crap, I need to pull the whole mix down", but it feels almost like starting all over again :)

Time after time I'm getting the feeling that my monitors just aren't presenting an accurate enough picture of the mix. However, I know part of the problem is that I can only listen quite "quietly", with a toddler sleeping around the corner.

As for borrowing the idea, nah - the song's been finished for nearly a week, based around an idea worked out in January. It does show you though how ideas are universal, and not something specific to an artist!

I'll have some time this weekend to crank up the track and try and work out the kick placement issues.

Heheh. I kind of thought the pizzicato could be attributed to universal coincidence. I have to admit I used it, in part, because of a song in a promo for one of Allied Nations' sets I heard.

Are you using a multi-band compressor?

I found Reaxcomp by Cockos (http://www.reaper.fm/reaplugs/), for free. It's what I used for mastering along with Reafir. It causes severe latency, so I only use it when I'm finishing a track.

I alternate between my own monitors and headphones to get an accurate picture. I'm still wanting the Mackie HR824 MkII's. Currently I'm using Altec Lansing computer speakers which are, for their size, surprisingly accurate and quite loud.

I read an article on mastering, written by a pro in that field, where he discussed how he had his monitors so low even a nearby conversation, however subdued, could encroach on his listening. I tried mixing at that level and was easily frustrated.

I re-edited the track and added a vocal accompaniment. I'd love to know what you think!
