So, someone made a video from our song

Some Japanese dude stole our song and made a...uh...I suppose you could call it a video...out of it.

Not sure if I should be pissed off that people are using our tracks without our permission or grateful for the free exposure. I'm actually kinda flattered and I'm glad that he credited it appropriately, but that song has gotten some attention from labels, so I probably should have taken it off my server. And, asking for my permission would have been nice, but, oh well...
I'm sure this has happened to some of you guys - what's your take on it? |

I haven't had it happen to me, yet, but I tend to think that it's more of a promotional opportunity. I've found a lot of music surfing YouTube. I'd leave it, but would also heed any advice you receive from a reputable label PR person.
To be honest, I thought of posting my own tunes on YouTube as a marketing avenue, but thought it was a little too self-aggrandizing. |

Actually, I think it's a great idea and we've been toying with the idea for quite some time now. I think it's a great way to set yourself apart from most of the crowd and I don't think of it as self-aggrandizing at all. In fact, I'd love to see videos from TA members. The biggest problems IMO are the crappy sound quality of youtube (makes the myspace player sound hi-fi!) and the cost of video production. |

They did? I'm married, so I didn't notice. I especially didn't notice the brunette at 2:59. ;) |

I have Nero and could probably do a slide-show with that (It is so god-awful a program but it will put slides to music). Someone was asking about video editors, in an earlier thread.
YouTube has a High Quality option, on it, but I tend to agree with you - that the sound is not very listenable, overall.
I'll admit to having an ulterior motive (which, on even a cursory inspection seems more self-aggrandizing) for not posting it, myself, and that is that it seems like it will be more effective to have had someone do it "for" you. It also seems like you have the benefit of interaction with your target market. Essentially, you have the benefit of someone "reacting" to your work with what, ostensibly, is their impression.
In that regard, congrats!
And that is a really solid song, BTW. |

Good points, Eddie!

BTW, did you go to Central Michigan? I grew up in Muskegon, lived in East Lansing for about 9 years while a student/grad student at MSU (Go Spartans!) before moving to Cali. Some of my bands used to play frat parties, festivals, and bars (The Bird) back in the early 90s - Mount Pleasant is a great town! |

My girlfriend has an old T-shirt from The Bird!
I actually moved here after meeting her, on-line. I'm not going to school here even though there are a couple of classes I might audit, if I get the chance. I've spent most of my life in Austin, TX, Denver, CO, or the Atlanta Metropolitan area, so a town the size of Mount Pleasant is a bit of a change, in a culture-shock sort of way.
I will say that this is one of the most beautiful places I've lived. |

| I know this is way off on a tangent but how do you know he's Japanese? The dude's profile says Bulgaria, for what it's worth. |

Oops. Yeah, you're right - I didn't notice that. For some reason, I thought I saw some Japanese writing. |

| Well anyway, I think pretty much every track with any commercial success eventually ends up as the background music to a static image or totally irrelevant video on YouTube, so take it as a compliment! |

Sig worthy!
If I were into that sort of thing. |
