got a question for all you trance headz out there,

question 1) If Armin, Ferry, PvD and Tiesto are all playing on the same night but at different venues, which one would you go see?

question 2) Same as before but with A&B, Eddie Halliwel, ATB and C. Law?

question 1 are the big dawgs of trance while question 2, the DJ varies a little bit more in style (me thinks)

1. Tiesto or Ferry depending on venue. No more PVD for me.
2. Probably CL but also depends on venue. No ATB for me.

WOW!

I'm suprised on how everyone answered question #1! I figured everyone would have selected the same top DJ but it seems pretty up in the air.

I'm personally not a big trance head so i'm trying to figure out why someone would pick Ferry over Armin (cuz to me they seem the same). thanks to those that gave an explanation.

years ago, like 2004-2005 latest, armin would have been my pick for question 1. these days every one of those djs bore the out of me. maybe this is due to the broader range of musical comparison i enjoy today, but even comparing these djs to themselves 5-10 years ago, their music today lacks creative depth and their sets remind me of fm radio. for question 2, christopher lawrence is the only one that interests me. in general the sound of trance hasn't changed much. every track i hear has the same formulaic build and break with the same lead sounds and same beat pattern--reliably no surprises. those "top" djs have been relegated to shuffling around vocalists and cheesy lyrics to keep it fresh. very few producers even attempt to push the envelope because the genre appeals to the endless supply of youthful edm naivity. thus the onus is on making easily-digestible music that doesn't challenge the listener and the strategy been hugely successful in its own right, but most people with an enduring passion for edm are eventually drawn towards the more dynamic sounds of other genres. ironically the best trance music is produced by producers who don't consider themselves trance artists. maybe this is just a symptom of american-market trance and somewhere in europe there's a band of obscure producers breaking new ground, but either way, there's much too much good edm out there for me to dwell on the ultra-commercial trance that floods this country. especially at the laughably outrageous rates these artists are charging for a booking compared to their contemporaries. hope that answered your question billy ;)

thats what i'm trying to figure out. i downloaded a couple sets from different trance dj's (many of them i deleted after listening to it the first time). so i'm trying to figure out how they differ.;)

edit* think of this as an educational thread for me :D

You hit it right in the head. A lot of those big DJs are lucky, they dont have to put on a show or mess with the tracks live in order to get booked.

I would pick:

1. Armin
2. A&B

But I would probably end up at:

1. Ferry
2. A&B

'cause my girl loooooooooooooves Ferry and he would be a close 2nd for me.

Armin, Ferry, PVD and Tiesto all sound different to me with probably Armin and Tiesto being the closest. Ferry most definitely has his own unique sound and is quite different from the others. PVD sets are pretty easy to pick out too.

But I would imagine that to someone not into trance, they would all sound fairly similar.
