Hello
Sample
I just put the above loop together today, I'd like to get some perspective on it - sometimes I'll put something together which I really like, but it gets horribly bad feedback from people (which is okay, that's how I learn).
As the thread title says, it'd be good to get some thoughts on this one - melodically/ harmonically, as well as mix quality wise.
Thanks in advance!

Listening.
The melody is cool i like that one, but only the first half of the sample, the second half the melody does not progress good in my ears, i would have repeated it instead of evolving it.
The clap is too short i think, a longer more splashy clap would have sounded better, and the bass could maybe sounded better with a different pattern or longer decay or something.
And the percussions arent really playing along with the rest, might be the choice of samples, the open hat sounds too much like a ride.
That being said, the lead synth and melody is very nice the first half of the sample, works well.. i hear potential there, but the second half of the sample doesnt sound any good.
Basically i think this is a result of an unlucky combination of sounds that sounds better on their own than together for the moment pherhaps. |

How Subtle says the last part doesnt fit I agree because the harmony becomes somewhat corrupted by pretty much only one note i feel.
I figured out the melody by playin it by ear..
I think you should try this.
- make that last sustained note one semitone higher (E instead of Eb/D#)
- then cut that note and have the last beat's note hit Eb/D#
- and instead of having Db gettin hit twice in a row at the end drop it down to Ab/G#.
heres a little example to hear what i mean

let me know if you would like the midi |

Thanks for the feedback!
I'll have a go at redoing the second half of the melody. I listen to a lot of other (more melodic) styles, so I often drift outside trance conventions. I can see where your version is going Nightshift, it is more trancey in nature. I'll have a go at reworking it.
I'll also experiment with different percussive sounds, I'll try a more pronounced clap. Currently the drums I have in there are small and don't draw attention to themselves.
I'm not sure what you meant by a few of your comments towards the end, Subtle - do you mean the bass sounds don't fit with the leads, that the sounds overall don't fit together, even if the patterns were changed? In terms of the bass programming, can you suggest any listening examples (artists, songs) I could reference against, to hear examples of what I could do with it? |

This is what i picture in my head when it comes to bassline.
My favorite track from last year, Absolute - Winter Time
Go on audiojelly and search for it, they have great quality on the sample.
Its not that the bass is bad, but it could use a little extra touch maybe, or some softening or warmth. |

I really like what you have so far. The first half of the melody sounds great. The second half sounds great up until the last 3 notes. I would have preferred a motion towards resolving to the tonic(not necessarily reaching the tonic) if you were intending on repeating the phrase. |

Okay, I'll try out that bass pattern (sounds like steady eighth notes, but delayed a 16th after the beat) and see what the groove feels like.
It also seems it's that last bar, the last bass note change/melody combination that's sounding odd. I'll experiment. |

| I really liked what I heard, just now, but noticed the same anomaly on the last note(s) of the clip, too. |

| Yeah agreed with above.. don't deviate the main lead it sounds good as it is in the first half. Perhaps add another counter around it to add progression later on |
