1998 Remix

cool! heartbeat reminds me more of ferry corsten than protoculture hehe. Love Technology is sweet, classic protoculture with a bit of a difference, love it! i've only heard set rips before of the 1998 remix, hopefully that will be released to the rest of us at some point too :D

I just finished an interview with Protoculture for a local magazine. I'll post it up in a week and a bit after it gets published.

I have been waiting for this forever. I hope we get to see the album releasd ASAP.:eyes:

That pretty much sums up exactly how I feel as well! Protoculture is my favorite psy producer by far and the wait for this 3rd album seems like it has been taking forever. He has been quiet lately and I feared we might not see it for a while longer. This is great news!! :D

That remix is a tune and a half!!!!:eyes:

Without a doubt, his remix to binary finary was amazing. One of the most anticipated albums especially for the true psy heads out there.

Amen to that!!! I just came across this track from him:

I think this is a recent remix from him if Iam not mistaken and he also did a remix of
John 00 Fleming & The Digital Blonde (00.db) - Oxygene

so he is really working these days!!!:eyes: :eyespop:

p.s. Hey Magnus any idea when you might be dropping by Toronto for a set?:D

Important things first: where is the new album? Your myspace has been advertising it for months!

It should be out by the end of the year at the latest. Latest release is on SoundKraft records V/A compilation – Serpentine Illusions.

What can we expect from the new release? Love Technology sounds quite similar to your previous tracks like Sweet Fine Crystalline. Will there be any significant deviations from your trademark sound?

There are definitely a few surprises in store.

Where/how did you first learn to produce?

I got my first computer and program when I was seven and basically taught myself. I play the piano by ear so music had always come pretty naturally to me. The electronic thing just seemed to be the progression of it.

Were you born and raised in South Africa? What was your childhood like? Were your parents musical people?

I was born and raised in Cape Town. My childhood was fairly idyllic and sheltered which was wonderful. My parents are both art teachers and have a deep love for music and anything creative.

Is it hard throwing parties and promoting ‘white’ electronic music in an environment where Caucasians are becoming increasingly marginalised? What is Cape Town like when compared with Johannesburg?

Cape Town in very European and cosmopolitan and is very different from the rest of South Africa. The Jo’burg scene is very small and different from the scene in Cape Town. I am pleased to say that there are more black South Africans at parties every year and there is no feeling of being marginalised at all.

Have you ever considered a move to somewhere like London, where there are more studios and musicians?

Yes many times, but the quality of life at home is too good. Everything comes with a price. Besides, I have my own home and my wife and my families are both there. Not to mention the great food, beaches, the mountains…

South Africa seems to be very big into psy-trance, as is Australia. I have a theory that this has something to do with all the open space available to us which suits the rolling, organic sound that so much psy-trance has. What do you say, bull, or credible? Why do you think it’s so popular in both countries?

We are lucky enough to have great climates and seem to be less targeted by the governments. In the UK it is a nightmare to throw a party.

What are you good at outside of music?

I love cooking and like to think I am good at that. I enjoy playing Xbox and annoying my wife and love messing around with 3D studios and Photoshop. I also love taking my dog Yorkie for walks, and let’s not forget shopping, of any kind. Preferably gear though.

What inspires you, whether it’s a physical object/place or other musicians, both electronic and non-electronic?

Other music is a huge inspiration as are my surroundings and the wonderful people in my life. Not to mention my gorgeous wife.

What have you got to say on Gareth, Regan and Anslem? How did you first meet up? How has the ride with Nano Records been over the years?

They are my dearest friends and always will be. They do a wonderful job of Nano, the Glade and the Origin/Earthdance festivals and I am glad we all hooked up.

What were you doing for employment/fun prior to having your breakthrough album in 2003?

I was studying sound engineering at college in Cape Town. That is actually where I met Gareth from Nano. We were studying together. Before that I was still at school.

How many months of the year are you currently touring? Do you find it strenuous?

I would say that I travel about a third of the year and yes, it is very strenuous.

Finally, what’s something that most people would be surprised to know about you?

I am completely normal.

Not the best or most interesting set of questions I've ever formulated, but I found out some stuff I wanted to. I was a little disappointed that he didn't elaborate more, but we were pressed for deadline and I'm sure Nate had better things to do!
