Don't e.g. Faithless, Chicane and Oceanlab tracks not sound the same to many people, or even trance in general?

You could say the same about other non EMD genres.

I've personally always thought that "everything sounds the same" is one of the stupider arguments some people use when trying to express their dislike towards something. I guess they use it (together with some other empty phrases) to leave a better impression than they would by simply saying "I don't like it". Most of the stuff, even in quite respected genres such as dub techno (is there a single fan of Echospace who haven't compared them to Basic Channel), minimal techno (Sleeparchive stuff is still awesome even if Mika Vainio did almost the same thing 10 years before), deep house, tech house... sounds way too similar because let's face it - dance music is not designed to sound too versatile or creative.

I agree, actually I would hate it when I won't be able to recognize a producers' "sign" when listening several tracks. Faithless, Klubbheads, Chicane, BBE, Robert Miles, Jam & Spoon, PvD and even Scooter, all had something recognizable in their tracks. Without that they never would have been successfull. So people want it to be the same till a certain level.
I guess a small difference between tracks for me could be seen as no difference to someone else.
And yes, sometimes I don't like a track because it's almost the same as another, but on the other hand I sometimes love a track because it only sounds a little bit different then another.
That's my view, and I don't think I'm the only one seeing it that way.

trance or any other genre will in the most diverse manor experance a cross over between other stiles.

this is mainly due to artist/producer seeking inspiration.

if you feel trance has gone stale check out some of the sets posted up by some of the dj's here on trance addicts. it worked for me!

On the subject, can anyone explain THIS to me, and sorry if it's been covered before, I don't know what topic to search for...

How did trance become so airy-fairy??? I mean the new sets I've heard from...anybody, really doesn't matter, Jon O'Bir, Ronski, whoever.

Percussion that sounds like popcorn! Little blips and scratches and farty fuzzes. It makes my skin crawl to listen to it and almost makes me gag.

Trance used to ROCK! I mean literally. It had reverb, the drums were slamming, the riffs would rip, the melodies had somewhere to go and it almost felt like you were listening to classic rock or metal.

Why is everyone tiptoeing and mincing and being proud of it? Are we all that stuck-up now?

oh god i can't stand paul miller! i bet he can't even tell his own tracks apart cause they all sound like the same recycled

What ever happens happens, i mean there is a sea of mess out there with everybody copying each other either for the money or to say 'hey look at me'

But its when the genuine, creative, inspirational guy or girl that stands back from the crowd of what you can only say are hungry rodents fighting amongst the scraps of the same old boring unorignal noise...and decides to really relax and transcend with the beauty of music and be original and be creative that will again be delivered with true music...

When this happens the music changes, Trance will change wether it be another blend of Trance or if it will just die out, its almost like a river trying to find another rivulet or turn or else it just drys up...but what you need is that someone who stands back from the crowd and just produce for the love of the music and nothing more...

It's one thing for a producer to have his own signature sounds but its really another when its the ONLY sound he ever uses.

Paul Miller IS a prime example, I will however admit that I do actually like one of his recent tracks under his Motion Blur alias.
Subtle
As long as Armin and Tiesto is supporting this stuff, it wont go away.

Why don't you go away, norger.

In its place in the mainstream is electro-fart-trance, clicky micro-trance/house(not neo trance), hybrid disco, and of course, "McProg" still plods on. There is some good minimal(not to be confused with micro) trance/techno, and occasionally some uplifting tunes, but like you, I had to dig through the piles of dirt to find it.
