Oh, only about $ 83.4 billion...
| quote: | Obama to Request $84.3B for War
President Obama is asking Congress for $83.4 billion in funding for the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. The request marks a complete reversal for Obama from two years ago, when he voted against war funding as a senator under former President George W. Bush. The request would bring the budgetary cost of the two occupations to nearly $1 trillion so far. Obama is also asking for $350 million for operations along the US-Mexico border and $400 million in counterinsurgency aid to Pakistan. Although the Democratic-led Congress is expected to approve the funding, some antiwar lawmakers are voicing opposition. Congress member Lynn Woolsey of California said, “Instead of attempting to find military solutions…President Obama must fundamentally change the mission in both countries to focus on promoting reconciliation, economic development, humanitarian aid, and regional diplomatic efforts.” |

"Oh my God! He's black and he's so articulate... he seems quite opposed to the Bush admin in both terms of policy and ideology... he's promising change! I'm gonna vote for him! I'm so progressive!" :stongue: |

I laughed really hard when he was talking about world free of nuclear weapons and American disarmanent of them. Just like much of his talk so far - lot of bull, very little of actual substance.
The point he made was a total lie, considering that USA will never give up nuclear weapons as long as another country has at least one weapon. Obviously other countries have no interest in giving up their deterrent force.
This is just a continuation of American foreign policy under Bush. I don't see a significant change that I can believe in.

| quote: | Iraqis Stage Massive Anti-US Protest
On the same day Obama requested millions more for war, tens of thousands of Iraqis rallied against the US occupation at a protest marking the six-year anniversary of the fall of Baghdad. Hazem al-Araji of the Sadr movement said opposition to the occupation unites differing Iraqi factions.
| quote: | Hazem al-Araji: “Those million people came from Iraq to express just one opinion that is calling for the US troops to withdraw from Iraq. They are Arabs, Kurds, Sunnis and Shia. They came after the call of Sayyid Muqtada al-Sadr
to say ‘No! No to America.’” |

As president, he has a different set of responsibilities than he did as a senator.
Anyway, i don't see how he's going back on his word. Yes, he is anti-iraq-war. However, he said he would conduct an orderly withdrawal. In order to do so, the operation still need to be funded. If he cut funding everyone would have to leave immediately. Still, funding would be required to pull everyone out of iraq. I'm sure people would still cry about him funding the war if he asked for funds to finance a withdrawal.
Moreover, he always pledged to increase spending in afghanistan. Contrary to the assertion that he is going back on his word, obama is actually doing just as he said in his campaign promises. |

| quote: | | In 2007, the Bushes donated 23% of their income to charity. In 2008, the Obamas donated 6 1/2%. I won’t even go into Vice President Dick Cheney’s 75% to charity — $6 million — in a single year vs. the $369 a year average for 10 years by Vice President Joe Biden. But I noticed that the White House made a big deal about the transparency in releasing a copy of their 1040s — “As another demonstration of the President’s commitment to openness and transparency, today the White House issued the following releases making the President and Vice President’s tax returns public.” Big whoop. Every president for years has done that. Their combined income was $2,656,902. They paid $855,323 in federal income taxes. They donated $172,050 – 6.5% of their adjusted gross income – to 37 different charities. Compare that to the Bushes: $719,274 in income, $221,635 in federal income taxes, $165,660 to charities — 23%. This is typical behavior among liberal politicians and conservative ones. The conservatives give their money; the liberals give taxpayer money. By the way, I notice the Obamas didn’t pay any extra taxes. | http://blogs.dailymail.com/donsurbe...bama/#more-8101
Pretty typical. Liberals are always ready to be generous with other people's money, however they don't often give up their own money on their own accord. |
