Mutek's a great event and Montreal's a great city. I liked going when I went in 2006. In 2007 and 2008 I chose to go to DEMF instead. They are 2 very different festivals IMO. If you want geeky, Mutek's the place.

Well I'm not going to either this year, so this vs that is irrelevant :p Though the Ricardo set in 06 would be hard to top.

DEMF = The Party-Party side of Techno
Mutek = The Geeky side of Techno

Not to say that Mutek isn't a great party, but it has more of the techno-nerd factor going for it.

I've been the past three years, and going again this year.

At Mutek, you'll get to hear allot of stuff that doesn't normally get played in Toronto or in North America / Canada. You get to hear more stuff on the weird / experimental side of things. ie: Layering the Buddah, sitting down on Yoga matts in a dark room with a bunch of speakers sournding the roomf for 360' sound and listening to a sound installation.

During the week there are panels / work-shops during the day. The big-parties are the Nocturns (Fri/Sat night) and the Pikniks (Sat/Sunday during the day).

Sure, DEMF has a great line-up of "Party" DJs - not to dismiss them, it's a great lineup - but you have people spinning allot of the same records / type of sound here. But, how often do you get to indulge your inner-techno nerd to an Raster Noton showcase? or the Atom installation?

The "Party" side of Mutek is also very fun with the Pikniks really being the highlight of the weeekend if the weather plays nice. The location for it is great, the sound is massive and the vibe is always top-notch. Richie vs Ricardo a few years ago is still one of my top-party memories, and the Nocturn that followed with Pole & Band / Deadbet blew my mind and was some of the best music I've ever heard live - and stuff I know I'll rarely/if ever get to hear that type of stuff played out in Toronto.

I keep debating "Do I do DEMF this year?", but Mutek keeps winning out due to types of acts that you just dont see here at all/very often.
