Get Window XP 64bit, I wouldn't downgrade to Vista unless you are very very sure you need to. Or you wait for Windows 7, but I doubt it will be any better than Vista in terms of stability and compatibility., but I guess we'll see. |
speaking of hands-on experience with windows 7 beta, I can say it has proven reliable on my old ass laptop ;)
Imagine XP's speed combined with Vista's graphics cute-ness :) I like win 7! |

| was more stable than vista at some point but perhaps that has changed. Or maybe W7 is already out. I prefer names with provocative lettering that says " hey , i'm cutting edge, you probably want to buy me" , like cubase sx, or lexus RX or SONY PS , stylus rmx. Windows 7 just reminds me how it isn't X . Like OSX which sounds badass. |

Your video card is over kill. Anything with SLI is always a bad idea with audio as those boards do anything they can do make video the most important thing. they will make sure your video cards get all the bandwidth they need and then some. | I do not think that will make any difference at all. Video cards are downclocked and all that when it isnt used, you can even turn them off if u want.
If he wants to game on his PC with badass video card it`s not going to interfer with music production in any way.
Of course, if he is not a gamer, sure it is overkill. |

well i've had different experience. Good video cards tend to reserve more ram address allocation in the +3gb range( not an issue now but he is planning to use xp) and gaming motherboards seem to encourage this. Good video cards seem to think they are so ing indespensable and i feel like they are hogging the pcie bus which is always somehow eventually linked with the pci bus and i haven't found a way to adjust the timing like with pci(maybe this has changed). They also operate at very very high frequencies that can interfere with audio internal cards. They are also loud and take lots of energy. They also hate jews.
My experience was with the Asus Commando which i purchased because i had 2 uads and 2 powercores and that was the only card that had enough pci.The system did work but it was the least stable system i ever had.I actually got rid of the pci cards in exchange for pcie for the mac and the commando is still just not really what i was expecting considering how it has allthe right chipsets for audio production. I know that it is just 1 experience but i read up about the issues i was having and the reasons they were happening were specifically related to what i had mentioned/ IF i were to buy a pc now, i would really only get things i will use. |

Indeed, 6GB is really not necessary with the setup listed.
Take your average 32bit XP with the 512MB graphics card, you'll only be able to use roughly 3 to 3.5GB of it, so it's money thrown away.
I suggest taking 3GB triple channel to go with your setup. |

Unless he gets WinXP 64bit. |

| i suppose if he ran out of ram, he could just increase the latency. |

Ram has nothing to do with latency. I'm glad I have established that for you RichieV, considering by your comment you didn't already know that. Now thank me or I won't aid you in your err again.
You can't just post misinformation into threads, you start to look like a moron. And I won't always be here to save you. |
