What is WOOB? It is the commotion of birds chirping as they soar over sloping plains; tides of tribal drums rising against the cackle of hyenas and the chirr of crickets; the human comedy playing out against the backdrop of life's quiet grandeur and silent cruelties. With the eye of a photographer and the ear of a naturalist, Woob's Paul Frankland brings the spirit of a global safari to shimmering layers of Eno-esque ambience.
"On Earth," a 32-minute trek from Pole to Pole, finds Frankland brilliantly fusing sample-based collage, Andean flutes, spirit voices, natural sounds, and a lulling, dub-like undercurrent. Listen closely, and you'll hear that WOOB is the million voices of people, plants, animals, and things swaying in harmony to the sound of the universal mother's drum. On "Wuub," it's the heartfelt chant with which pygmies greet the dawning day. Things take a darker turn with "Strange Air," wherein a single, truly marrow-chilling human scream echoes beneath the slow, sideways movement of a sun-lit sky that can't be bothered to care. The closing "Emperor" is more ambiguous still--perhaps the deep, contented growl of lions, sated by the day's kill, watching the sun set over the savanna.
