Steve aoki (coachella) (pg. 3)

if steve aoki's next set was made up of armin van burens tracklist from his spundae party in SF , would he still get hated on? what if it was richie hawtins last playlist, or if he played ferry corstens track selection for his gig next month at vanguard? i think no matter what aoki does, all the haters will keep hating. i have seen a LOT of TA's at events for many "edm" dj's and these TA's arent dancing...i thought it was Electronic DANCE music for a reason. the people at coachella were dancing, and having a good time, whats wrong with that? As long as they were not being disrespectful or doing anything illegal, whats the problem?

Aoki is a mashup dj, so not sure why we even bother to talk about him on TA...Scotty boy is a mash up dj and i saw him last thursday while celebrating my birthday in Santa barbara, he had a LOT of people dancing, but he wasn't playing techno/trance/minimal, he was playing rock/house/hip hop mashups, which is what the crowd came to see.

EDIT

oops maybe at godskitchen scotty boy plays a different style than the boogie SF/SD clubs and vegas pool parties I have seen him at. Doubt that he would open up for luke with rock mashups...

if this is the case then it shows he is a versatile DJ which i think is a good thing! If he spins banda at quinceañeras then i'm voting him #1 DJ in America next year lol!

I can appreciate a DJ that shows a personality, but I think Aoki goes over the top with his shenanigans. Crowd surfing at Vanguard??!! WTF? I think he over compensates with his antics for his obvious lack of mixing talent. To his credit, he must realize that and he's found his niche, and some people like it.

The opposite of him is a guy like Mark Farina, one of my personal favorites. No show, no jesus poses, no BS, just an amazing music talent. He brings it every time and its 100% about the music. You can close your eyes, dance, and get your money's worth each time.

oh they have quite the history too. i remember someone here on the boards posting about how aoki was up to his usual antics and he ended up spilling on farinas gear at some massive here in socal they played last year.

all good points and i see what your trying to say, but the DJ's you refer to are actually good DJ's. I'm all for an entertaining DJ (Eddie Halliwell), but at least make sure the DJ is a good DJ.

Steve Aoki, well... lets just say i wouldn't download his music for my listening pleasures.

Yah, I havent downloaded anything Steve Aoki either, probably never will. Actually, I never heard much about Steve Aoki until the Vanguard stunts. I guess thats a testament to his music sucking, no one would spread his sets around. But since he is an entertaining DJ, he has a following. So what im saying here, and you probably already understand, if you have that great taste, and great DJn skills, why not add an entertaining show to your repetoire as well, to make your shows more interesting. It doesnt mean crowd surfing, but something unique and out of the normal line that DJ's walk on. Sven Vath, he does it through his crazy antics. Look at Villalobos with his paisely sways and hair flips, Carl Cox with his jacking, Armin Van Buuren with his cheerleading skills, David Guetta with his do it yourself MC pep talks. Zabiella got up fast because of his insane scratching and fx manipulation. Gotta give something for people to talk about, even if people are going to talk , who cares do something.

Because most DJ's are capable of the same things sound wise, the discrepency between talent has kinda been downsized due to mixing becoming easier, so now that everyone can mix, and everyone can program a similar set because of Beatport, you kinda have to evolve in ways that the crowd can visually see that you are different when they come to a show you are playing.

Love Fest.. Farina was pissed.

I donno.. if i dont like the music, the least he could do is mix it together correctly...

exactly! if we were blind, why would you pay $100 to go to a tiesto show when you can see a local DJ and listen to just a good of a set.

oh and Paul van dyk and others had no problem playing stuff steve is known for such as LMFAO...i had posted a thread stating how often will "I'm in Miami Bitch" be played at WMC and a lot of people were quite negative(kinda like on this thread, likely the same people lol) and after listening to a lot of the mixes from WMC, it sure seemed like that track got MAJOR play.

I've never personally seen an aoki set, but everyone is always telling me about how good he is. I've seen videos of his sets and personally can't stand it, but to each his own. There's obviously an audience for his mashup rock/house/hip-hop style, so let the ****** do his thing and just don't go to his shows lol..

Who is "everyone?"

I've never heard ONE person who actually saw him and actually cared for the music he played come back and say he was good.

This is purely talking about him as a DJ. Not necessarily about exactly what tracks he plays. I can go to just about any club in SF that plays the same style he does and I bet 95% of those DJs are better than Aoki in every way. EVERY WAY.

Because of the family he is in, Aoki got good PR. And with good PR came this stupid stardom which he DOES NOT DESERVE as a DJ. Pure and simple. If he is just some everyday person out there, he would be nothing now and nothing more than a wannabe bedroom DJ....and then even with that, he'd probably give up because I bet he doesn't even give a rat's ass about the music itself, but more that he just wants to have all eyes on him....

He's like a male version of Paris Hilton...

I bet Paris likes Aoki.

1. If Aoki came out and MIXED like them and with their charisma (and not being overly stupid), then I think people here would act surprised but be encouraging and hope he keeps it up. But the fact is, Aoki has never been nor ever will be as good of a "DJ" as any of them so this statement has no point. Because HE CAN'T MIX and probably knows zilch about harmony.

2.As a mashup DJ, I actually liked listening to Scotty Boy a little as he became known. I used to hear him on the radio up in SF all the time...he used to play every Friday at 9pm or something. then something happened and he just had all these mashup tracks that flat out didn't go to together and suddenly his mixes sounded like . I think things just got to a point where there weren't many more tracks that you could mashup well. It's interesting that after the noticeable crap that he started to play, he was soon off the air. That said, as a DJ, he is far far better than Aoki and that's why you don't see people hating on him as a DJ nearly as much.

and yeah, Scotty Boy can play more than just (vegas) mashups.

Fair enough, he does play music to you and myself. To his crowds he probably plays as good as music as any DJ that we think plays good music. A DJ's purpose is also to entertain though, and if he can do that through his physical actions, it's just an extra dynamic towards his performance. I'd be bored if I went to a show and all I got was some good music to be honest. I want to see the DJ's personality as much as I want to hear the music, I think they go hand in hand.

good music speaks for itself. music requires a lot of effort to mask, which is where your idea of entertainment comes in. i'm sure the crowd would be entertained if aoki paid a midget to a whore on the decks while a dialup modem played over the speakers. he's still a dj.
