I've asked something similar, but not quite so as the following: Why does all the music in Essential Mixes sound as though they've been pumped with steroids? I mean, is the output of the DJ's mixer hooked up to some sort of equalizer/filter?

FM Compression.

FM compression would be the correct answer. In fact, nine times out of ten the mixes aren't even done anywhere near the Radio One studios and are just sent in, thus eliminating the possibility of any "tampering" of said music during recording.

Yes. Radio definitely destroys the true dynamics of music when broadcast. That's why I rarely listen to the radio. It just annoys me.
