depends on your budget enrique. there's bikes for all purposes but it'd be useless suggesting one until I know what you wanna spend :p
I would probably suggest a hybrid for your style though. it has a more relaxed type of riding & can do off-road on gentle paths/cycle ways but won't handle anything too extreme, drops etc.
for example if you were paying £600ish (whatever that is in usd now) you'd get such as

basic front suspension to help on slight bumps, upright riding position, good mid-range sram/shimano components and such.
spend the same on a proper 'mountain bike' and you'd get probably basic entry-level components for the 'off road' sense, with the basic & quite poor rockshox dart forks. go upto £675ish and you'd get a great bike though

My bike is a tad more up the food chain line and right now i'm doing the kind of riding you want to do, but I know that once i get some core fitness, it'll handle a bit more offroad when I'm ready to hit it. |

Another one? Damn, must be like a day-care centre at your place. Is Tricia looking after them or something, or is she roped to the wall too? |

I would get a Specialized. I've had two now and they're great bikes.
Make sure you get a model with lockout on the forks and make sure they are RokShox. Lockout will make the forks really stiff, which is good for commuting. No other suspension company has as durable lockout mechanism as RokShox. |

you get great parts for a great price.
Although my other advice is to get dual suspension and head to the mountains. Nothing beats flying down 2,000ft of single track after climbing just as many feet at a 3% incline! do it! |
