Hey all, It looks like I'll be going to college in Boston next year, and I have some questions about the scene.
Firstly, is Boston known for having good EDM clubs/attracting high caliber djs?
Secondly, since I won't be 21 when I arrive, I realize that getting into clubs will be challenging. Will the fact that I myself am a club DJ allow me to work in clubs which normally require guests to be 21+?
Thanks in advance. |

boston gets big djs sometimes, not as frequently as new york and for the past year it seems as though most big djs play during the middle of the week rather than on a friday or saturday night.
as for working in the clubs, you can definitely do that, but getting in will be more of a problem when you aren't working (unless you establish some good relationships with the people that work at the clubs) |

| It seems that most DJs just stopping by in Boston on the way to NYC over the weekend/Friday. By the way, any clubs in Boston that do trance? Seems like most go with DnB. |

| i never knew that they did DnB around boston (nor do i care)... i dont think there are many places that play trance but you can find house at a few places quite regularly |

| mostly house but before the conference they were bringin in the trance a little... AVB, corsten... van doorn is gonna be @ roxy boston in 2 weeks. I'm more of a house person anyways so I don't mind it...oh yeah and the not being 21 part sucks...only place I can think of that is 18+ is rise and that is afterhours. you either have to be a member to get in or on a guestlist(which isn't difficult to get on) rise pulls in some good house dj's from NY sometimes and some of bostons also. if you like any of those guys... what school you going to? |

| I'll probably be going to Boston University, but coming from Brussels, I'd love to keep in touch with clubbing and Djing any way I can. I'll take it you live in Boston? |

live about 50 miles south of boston...Providence, RI is a lot closer to me if you know where that is but they don't have anything good at all when it comes to EDM (pretty much non-existent) so when we go out we hit boston...don't mind the drive to and from. don't think it would hurt sending some people messages from smaller bars/clubs to maybe get your foot in the door to dj (if that's what you do). door guys are usually strict depending on where you are. doesn't hurt either dressing nice and bringing some girls along. |

Like mentioned before The Carl Cox, David Guetta, Armin Van Buuren, and Ferry Corsten types come through Boston via King Size Events either at The Roxy or at Underbar. The Roxy is a huge room - 3k people.
The only thing Boston really lacks is a week in week out big room ie. Estate or Avalon was.
Rise is the BEST place to go clubbing in Boston these days with it's consistenly awesome lineups. Danny Howells, Josh Wink, Bill Patrick, Konrad Black, Mark Farina, and many more big names frequent the club. The lineups in the upcoming weeks are awesome - Tom Middleton is tonight, Dyed Soundorom next week, and Phonique in a couple of weeks. There is also a VERY big name that I can't announce here just yet. I also playing there myself (a 5 hour set in the lounge) on May 16th. It definitely has the best vibe in the city. Justin Drake of Peace Division told me he wished he was playing there that night instead of Estate ;) That's alot coming from a guy who's played all over the world including DC-10 in Ibiza.
check out www.riseclub.us for more details. Rise is ALWAYS 18 plus.
The Middlesex Lounge has a weekly thursday techno party called Make It New and feautures excellent residents as well as international guests including Jeff Samuel and Marcel Dettman recently. Middlesex lounge is located in Cambridge. Also located in Cambridge is The Phoenix Landing which hosts two weekly house/techno parties - Midweek Techno (Wednesdays) and Rebound (Sundays). They've had several big name djs come through including Adultnapper, Paco Osuna, Dixon, James Zabiela, Ewan Pearson, The Italoboyz, and many more forward thinking techno/house acts. Cassy is coming there 5/13.
check out www.midweektechno.com for more details.
Dancing on the Charles was a bi-weekly event last summer and consistently had 250 people plus on a saturday night next to the river rocking out to awesome tunes.
The Good Life downtown hosts many parties each week and has had guests like Claude VonStroke and the Dirty Bird party which featured Christian Martin, J Phlip and Bostons own Tanner Ross. The goodlife site has a ton of information on whats going on there. Metro Area is there 5/9 with my homie Mark Ingram opening.
dont know the addy for the goodlife but if u google it will pop up.
Caprice also has weekly friday techno/house parties as well. Underbar always has dance music on saturday nights not affliated with the king size events that have been hosted there. Steve Lawler/M.A.N.D.Y./16 Bit Lolitas have been big guests that recently played there.
The Groovanauts.com forum has a boston section ;) Lots of events are posted there! |

the 21 issue has been bothering me for awhile, luckily it ends this year for me. i just went to rise all the time, plenty of trance bookings for me in the last 2 years. andy moor, stoneface and terminal, kyau and albert, and filo & peri.
i suggest gettting yourself a fake in belgium before you leave, because no one in the states knows what a belgian id looks like, so you can get a crappy one and it wouldnt matter. that solves your 21+ issue.
as suggested before, KingSize (kingsizeboston.com) does great bookings. SvD is in two weeks and Kyau & Albert are coming in June.
if you are into other stuff outside of trance and prog, you should read and follow what pat says.
lastly, if you are here in the summer, let me know, i will be doing a lot of house parties at my house.
hope to see you around! |

Hey, thanks for all the info and the invite! You studying in Boston? Also, might seem like a daft question, but I'm assuming that Rise doesn't serve drinks? |

| yea i go to Brandeis. i'll be a junior next year. rise does not serve alcohol, which is why they have the afterhours license :P |

| You could always take a train to New York every once in a while, when we get big DJ's here. It's about 3 or 4 hours away from Boston I think. Most of TA here is pretty cool you can probably find someone to stay by, or just sleep on the train on the way back. |
