Do you smell something burning? (pg. 3)

I'm familiar with the event listings forum, this thread was started just to put the feelers out and maybe build a little hype.
And no, we aren't a charity, but my wife and I are both fairly low-income and also in school for shiatsu therapy, which as you can imagine is a further drain on our finances. I may be a bit touched in the head for trying to hold events under these circumstances, but the response we've been getting so far keeps me enthusiastic and coming back for more.
Andreas and I started this production company to fill what we saw as an absence in Toronto's dance music scene - there simply aren't that many DJs getting booked to play banging Detroit Techno, local or otherwise. We aren't really concerned with profit at this point, just in holding quality events with the best talent we can get our grubby little hands on. As mentioned, we have a bit of momentum after our first two events, but we need some help to up the ante a little. The DJs who've played for us so far can see that we have a good thing on the go and have been generous enough to play for drinks and transport - next time around, I'd like to see them walk away with a little something in their pockets for their efforts. This is a hard thing to do when we have to rent sound and we're charging minimal or no cover (our first two events were free and we used an absolutely brilliant Dynacord soundsystem which garnered much praise). The deck party seemed like a fun way to help out with this, and the responses in this thread make me very hopeful for Pivot's future! |

i have no problem with an event like this. the only thing i see wrong is labelling it as a fundraiser. it is not a fundraiser. from what i understand, you want to raise money to continue hosting more events in the future. that means you want to make a profit and use those funds to continue doing what you're doing. that does not make this a fundraiser. it makes it a business.
if this is considered a fundraiser then every club out there should label their events as a fundraiser. |

Well, as long as you have no problem with it, I can sleep soundly at night. ;)

O.k., just so I can appease the TOTA semantics police, what would you call a free event with a suggestion of donation to help further what we're doing? "businessmoneyraiser" just sounds awkward. |

Probably the best thing is to just call it a Free Deck Party and that all you are asking for is a donation for your cause.
Now, ahem...Pay no attention to the people in here who are quick to put you down.
Some of them have forgotten what being a TOTA dj is...or what it was like for them before they got their foot through the door. How sad :(

agreed. that way a donation is not mandatory.
fundraiser events is when everyone must pay and the money goes to another cause. |

Update...
We're still going ahead with this weekend's shenanigans, but have decided to scale back the party and shift the focus to just having a fun day out in the sun on our newly renovated deck. I realized I've been feeling pretty overloaded as of recent, and after talking with the wife and Andreas we've decided to temporarily put the larger Pivot events on the backburner while I focus on finishing up the spring term for shiatsu school. So the semantics police can put away their batons - we'll still be passing the hat, but now we'll be doing so to help cover the costs of the gear, gas for the out of town talent (Curtis is coming in from Guelph), drinks for the DJs and a case of almond milk for smoothies. Anything that's leftover will go toward purchasing discard wood so we can make planters and green our deck out for future enjoyment for everyone!
I won't be putting this up in the events forum, as we're keeping this invite-only. Our deck can comfortably fit about 40 people and TOTAs who've expressed interest in attending can PM me or send an email to [email protected] with your name and the number of guests you're planning on bringing.
We're going with Saturday the 16th - forecast so far is sunny and 17C with the chance of showers. We'll only cancel if it looks like there will be more rain than sun - so far, we're sitting pretty. Start time is 1 p.m. until 11 p.m. - perfect warmup for the rest of the weekend! And we've decided to keep the 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. slot available for one or two DJs/PAs who'd like the opportunity to strut their stuff, with the possibility of being booked for future Pivot events. TOTA DJs/PAs who'd like to throw down should PM me with a link to a recorded set - we'll pick and announce the opener in a couple of days. Please keep in mind that we're a turntable-only setup - if you use Serato, you'll have to bring your own interface.
Will be a day of stellar tunes, with everything from classic Chicago House to banging Techno and all shades between. Especially excited for Curtis Maranda, who's now incorporating live elements into his DJ sets. Check these out - some seriously high energy mixes!
Decknanigans!

lol @ too lazy to PM - aren't you on the mail list already?
Here's what imma gonna do- everyone in this thread who's already expressed interest will get a PM from me with deets and directions - easy peasy.
Ryan and Mark are using the Dynacord for their own thang this weekend, but we're getting a nice pair of powered tops to go with my sub. Loud enough to rump shake, but won't disturb the neighbours in the houses across from the back lot. |
