Good grief man, can you ever take a picture.
Looks like a Kubrick film. Bravo sir. |

Did anyone else make it out today? I woke up super early for a fun-filled solo day of Doors Open Toronto, and i never thought i'd enjoy it as much as i did!
The places i visited were:
- Elgin/ Winter Garden Theatre
- Canon Theatre (old Pantages)
- Stantec Architecture
- Ontario Association of Architects
- BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir Temple
I was in awe of the temple and its craftsmanship. If anyone has any desire to see it, i would HIGHLY recommend it! It's open 7 days a week for tours :)
Another big highlight (and hidden gem) was the Stantec office... omfg! What a site to see! It was an old sock factory that was renovated with LEED certification to accommodate a design office housing 200 employees... amazing!
I took a load of pics, so i'll post them up later :)
If anyone was contemplating going, i would totally suggest taking advantage of this opportunity tomorrow. |

i didn't go.
:p
but srsly, i had a great time today.
i went to wychwood barns and just loved how the community was using the space. the neighbourhood is very lucky to have this space.
next stop was greenwood yards which was great. it really reminded me of hillcrest with lots of goodies to photograph and see. the model 'city' with the streetcars was awesome.
last stop was at the eglinton bus garage and just like greenwood it was awesome. they had all the different buses out and open for everyone to see. they even brought out a newly rebuilt fishbowl that still had a fresh coat of paint on it. also got to check out where the security cam hardware is located and what views you get from the cameras. a bus was also raised to see under the belly of the beast. and nothing like finishing off with an informative ride through the bus wash. btw, i overheard that they finished off with about 1500+ people at greenwood and 850+ at the garage.
overall and very very good day. |

i went there a couple of weeks ago for a tour and gotta say, even though stantec is the "evil" empire, i'd LOVE to work there. i read an article about their office in a previous issue of SABMag, but seeing it first hand was a lot better. plus there was good food after. :D

nice building overall. there wasn't too much to see for the normal person when i went last year, but for us, i think it's a bit more special. ;)

it really is pretty amazing at the work people can with their hands. even though there are few of these around the world, i'm really glad we have one of our own here in toronto. |

a bit overdue but anyway...enjoy.
Wychwood Barns - beautiful public space for the community. these were once ttc streetcar barns from back in the early 1920's. More info and history.
In the greenhouse
there's a wonderful childrens playground here. i wanna be a kid again. :(
it was very very busy with the farmers market there.
Greenwood Subway Yards - One of the new places for doors open this year. i love how the ttc is rotating new places for the public to see. all the workers there are proud of what they do and it really shows.
a subway truck painted on the wall.
painting a subway car
sanding a damaged car that derailed at davisville
models of old buses and streetcars. this was definitely a highlight.
old PCC streetcar. there are only 2 left after the ttc sold off a whole bunch to other cities including alexandria, egypt. the last 2 cars are running the harbourfront route during weekends all summer long. it's definitely an experience to ride one of these cars.
fishbowl bus. we still got a few running on our system.
eglinton bus garage - this is a fairly new facility built in the early 2000's.
how the buses stay clean.
newly refurbished fishbowl with new paint.
this structure supplies antifreeze or something so the buses can turn on in the winter.
yes, i went through the wash.
canon theatre
osgoode hall
zeidler partnership - newly renovated space. lots of natural light, beautiful white, red and yellow colors. awesome space to work in. all the industrial vents and ducts really show that zeidler designed the space.
mountain equipment co-op roof - had to climb a ladder to get up. was quite an experience, for some lol.
looking west towards spadina.
looking south.
day 1
day 2
and that's that. :) |
