Small DJ trick I need help with

You know when a DJ playes a track, and all of the sudden in the end of the bar, he cuts the track for a second and then brings it back.
I tried looking but I couldnt find a sample.
I think you all know what I mean.
Anyway I'm having trouble doing it, can you help ?

EDIT

That's not very hard to do. You can just pull the volume fader down quickly on the last clap of a bar and smack it back up precisly at the next beat. I would have made you a sample, but I can't find my cable for recording from my md to the pc

Hmm, I tried that, but I just cant seem to get the perfect key adjust, I think it may be switching the phono switch to the line very fast, could it be?

Could be a kill switch, or crossfader reverse.

but even without those on your mixer, it's easy to to, just move the volume fader up and down quickly on the beat.

This little trick is easily acheived with the phono/line switch. If you can, just flick the switch on the beat you want to cut and then flip back to phono. Much easier than volume because there is no fading up or down. You just have to make sure to be on beat or it sounds like crap.

It's an easy trick as it is, but the phono/line switch just makes it easier.

i have a mpeg of pvd doing that.... its easy once you get the hang of it....

I have a friend that does that with rap.....I guess he uses that tech. to let the crowd know what coming up next....if I can...maybe able to get sample this Sat.

killswitches are best for this, just a quick tap and presto

kill buttons are better, switches cause microphic clicks..that you hear when you flick it..buttons are silent

Hmm I prefer to do it with the normal line faders. First of all don't bring the fader completely down, as that will be too much (you'll have the feeling there will be a empty spot in the sound). Halfway down is more than enough (besides, as you move the fader less, you can be quicker in the movement).
The trick is not really to think about the decreasing part, but more the bringing it back movement.

Think as it more than emphasing the next beat. You decreased the sound for a beat, so the next one will have extra power. Just follow the groove and you'll feel naturally when you'll need to move the fader back (the up-down movement is quite fast, should only be down on the beat you wanna take out (or just after it depending on the effect), and back up full at the next one).

On certain occasions, mainly techno tracks, you can do such movements succesively. Makes a very interesting sound, like it's chopped up. I'll make a sample after my exams, when I plugged my gear back in.

Carl Cox did that about a bajillion times last summer when I saw him.

yeah definately. The phono/line switch is good to do it. some people use the crossfader though, i tried but still find the phono/line switch better.

its good not to overdo it.
