Depends how you have your general setup really and that means do you run them as inserts or sends? i.e. some poeple run things like fliters (or other fx) as permanent inserts and just have them bypassed when they're not using them, whereas others have them as sends but return the channels usually back to higher channels (i.e. the remaining channels after their normal project channels). Then you can mix them according to taste. This is just one way of working though - I'd need a bit more info on how you structure your projects to help further.
Basically try this sheet
http://mattparkin.com/PDFs/Track_Sheet_48_Letter.pdf
So you have kick in cell 1, bass in cell 2, lead L in cell 3 lead R in cell 4, etc. etc. Then when you've filled it up you can use the remaining channels for your return from outboard.
This is really a classic mix setup though and without knowing what your doing I can;t figure out whether this or another method would be best.
let me know, and hope it helps |

| I'm thinking of getting an Akai MFC42 and running my kick and bass buss into the mono channel, and my perc buss into the stereo channel. If i got a d-sub running from the 'buss out' into the filter, then return them into 1-24 would i just return them to the line in? |

Exactly - that would work just fine. Tthe busses on the d8b let you do this easily.
If you're just doing send and returns on the bus then it's probably neatest way of working. I'm sure you know but bear in mind that the mfc only has a stereo output (even though it's got separate mono in and a stereo). AFAIK, that means you'll only be able to use it on one element at a time (unless you do it as a group FX and send multiple channels through the buss all to be affected by the single same fx setting if you get what I mean).
So if you wanted to have one fliter effect on the kick then a totally different effect on the perc, you'd have to send that individual track to the mfc, record the result (the wet return) then change the setting and do it again for the other track with the different setting.
As for a D-sub, get one from here:

No one makes better multicore looms. Just tell them what kit it's for, what length you want and what connectors you want and they'll do the rest. Actually you might(?) want look in to an account with them for your studio and they supply all the pro studios (abbey road, real world, strongrooms, Liam Howlett etc.). |
