It has some pretty damn good reviews and I'm looking to get 2-3 "essential books" on anything that will help with trance.

Can anyone recommend anything? Thanks!

It provides an overview of a number of styles - hip hop, techno, trance, trip hop, ambient...I forget the others...

It also provides a basic overview of audio editing, plugins, and so on, as well as other areas such as promoting your music.

I'll have to flick through it again, but my first impression was it's good for an overview, but not really for in-depth advice. If you're working on a number of different styles it could be useful.

If you do decide to get it, take note that there is a second edition that came out in October 2008. Newer and cheaper through Amazon.

I agree with derail it's an overview of basic knowledge and learns you basic sounds it also has a cd with it so you can here the sounds your trying to make but it's very basic sounds so even if you know a little about sound design then you will already know how to create these sounds. It does have some good pointers and it was a good read.

I do not think there is a book out there anyway that will tell you everything you want to know about sound design eq'ing and mixing etc all in one book...

I would say to you to get several books each on there main topic eg Mixing only or Eq only sound design etc as that will give a more in depth point in what your actually wanting to learn.

I own both versions of this as well as several other books on production. From what I read, the DMM is very good to just OK depending on your existing skill level.

For those just starting out, there are a lot of valuable "generalizations" in there which will give you a good jumping off point. That being said, it is important to try not to take things too literally, as each setting is highly subject to the context in which it is placed. Anyone who has been producing for a few years may not find as much value in this book, but there is always a few things that you read and think "hmm, I did not know that. Good to know."

I think the danger with this book (and others) is that newer producers take books like this as gospel and refuse to deviate from the suggested settings. "My kick MUST peak at -8." "My track MUST use Patterns A, B, or C if I want to make it trance." That sort of thing.

So if you take it for what it is, a good "general guideline" book, then it can be valuable for newer producers and as a good refresher for experienced producers. The 2nd edition of this book is updated a lot more than the 1st edition, so be sure to get that one.

Make no mistake though, there are going to be very few people who can pick up a book like this and crank out a banger straight away, and if they did, they probably already had the talent and didn't need the book in the first place.

waste of time and money imo, read the manual of your daw instead if u absolutely have to read anything. thats my meaning though, probably beacuse i hate to read and rather turn knobs and see whats happening.

I recommend getting that book, you will learn something to help you on your way.

i bought the first one. Well my brother bought it as a christmas present. It is only 30 $ and it is a good read regardless if most of it is rather basic.

I don't see it being a waste of money considering the price.

I'm the same way. I've been using Reason since v.1 and I have never really read the manual.

I already read the manual and reread certain parts of it over and over again.

But you're pretty much saying if I wanna bake a cake I should just use the recipes on the box and not buy a cookbook that will have those recipes + thousands more?

Thats called scarcity thinking.
