Music Knowledge Contest #1

This game has no relation to the current ID Contest series going on, and runs separately.

As I said earlier, I came up with an idea for another music contest for this forum. Its similar to the current ID Contest. In this game, anyone has an equal chance to win - however, if you have been exposed to more electronic music over a longer period of time - you have the edge.

Here's how the game works. Download the zip file, listen to the samples, and using a txt file provided enter the year when you think the track was released. Then PM me with your results. Artist/track name are not required and they will not be considered (this is a different concept). At the end of the contest, however, the artists/titles of all samples will be posted.

SCORING SYSTEM is based on points - the lowest score wins. Your results are compared to the actual values, and the difference is your point total for each of the samples.

For example:
ID 25 - you guessed 1980. But the actual year of release was 1985. So you would get 5 points (the year differential). If you guessed the year correctly, you will not get points for the ID sample.

Your point total for all samples will be tallied and posted - remember: the lowest score wins. Tiebreaker: earlier submission.

Due to the nature of this contest, participants can only submit a total of 3 revisions in addition to the first result.

NOTE: The name/artist of the track is not important and will not give you any point deductions. Discogs database was used to confirm the earliest release date of all tracks in this contest (year only). The contest runs 1 month (ends on June 16, tuesday @ midnight), and the winner of this contest will get to run the next one for July.

You can use Discogs.com to confirm the the earliest release date of the track - if you know what the sample is or have a good idea (if you're not sure).

At the end of this contest the name/artist and year of all samples will be posted, with additional information and statistics of participants involved.
----------------------------------------------------------

Hints: The person who will win this inagural contest is probably going to be the one who is closest to getting ID #65 correctly. It's a tough one. This contest has 70 ID's, all electronic, from ambient/noise to gabber/hardcore, trance, house and everything in between. Some of the famous artists whose talents are featured here are Armand Van Helden, Deep Dish, Steve Rachmad, Larry Heard, Dag Lerner, Manuel Göttsching, Green Velvet, Kirk DeGiorgio, Giorgio Moroder, Patrick Cowley. That's all for hints - anything else is considered as giving away the answer! Good luck! Questions - PM me.

Also, I need everyone's help in naming this contest properly. Thanks!

DOWNLOAD LINKS - choose one: - if anyone can provide hosting, that would greatly appreciated! :)

Its a different concept. Points system is different, too. Different people would win this one, and its not difficult. Its creative. And it gives people more choices.

Artist/track names dont matter here, and they actually would take away from the concept. It won't be the same person winning because I picked specific tracks over a great period of time - not just trance circa 1991-2009.

As with regards to your modification suggestion - if you already know the song, and why only get 4 points for it (as what you're suggesting) - then why not 50 (for genre, creativity, label, vocals/no vocals, etc)?

To rephrase for IpLaYWiTLiGhTs - this game has no relation to the current ID Contest series going on.

In that contest, you have to know songs - it tests your ability to remember songs/artists (but no matter what kind of music collection you have, you probably will never win it).

This game is different and it tests for other parameters - in particularly the points system is totally different.

So whomever can look up the tracks on Discogs before anyone else wins?

Not really. If you don't know the ID, you can still guess the year by the sound of it.

OH, it wasn't clear to me that the samples weren't identified. That makes much more sense. :)
