| maybe this is a dumb question but what kind of music do they usually play at compression?. i've never been but it looks like fun |

At a high level: Techno/House.
But I started Compression with an eye towards the soulful side of each. So, we also branch out to the various strands of each: Detroit, Deep, Minimal, with some Electro on occasion.
I've never been into the nose bleed speed techno that was popular a few years back.
So if you like to dance - Compression is a good place to be. I bring in Funktion One sound, and to my ears, its probably the best system in LA (mobile). Bar none.
check out our past shows here:

then go listen up on those artists and you will get a good feel for what is heard.

Hey guys,
the venue has strict policy for accommodating Hotel Guests first. This is a fact of life for the rooftop. Its not a club per se where they can forecast based on a line out front and that's it.
Secondly, I question anyone's intent to show up at 6:30 p.m. and expect to get in at what is arguably one of the most popular places to be during the good weather/summer months. It is ALWAYS wise to come early to well promoted parties at popular spots that are going to have good DJs - and that have limited capacity.
That's just common sense.
I've had this same argument with some people who were upset about not getting in at Francois K (for instance) even though there were on the list. We hit capacity early at the King King (obviously). It sucks of course, because I have every intention of getting the most people in within reason - that's why I do events. I want people to hear the music we are playing.
But we have to take into account the entire context here - its an intimate spot. There are popular DJs playing - and there are hotel guests that have to be accommodated. So, The Standard makes sure there is room for overflow - not just for those that are there to party and leave.
Please keep that in mind. I suggest getting there a lot earlier for such a popular spot/party. We hit capacity at 3:30 p.m. and it was a battle all day to try to get people in for the remainder of the party.
I wish you didn't have a bad experience - I hate for that to happen. But like I state in our list sign ups, the fact that anyone who is on a list does not guarantee admission. I always state to get there early to ensure no hassles. When venues hit capacity (based on their rules), all bets are off and we have to manage according to the rules.
All that being said, I do thank everyone for their support and for those that came out. It was a fantastic time. We are all grateful for the good times and vibes.
Our next rooftop party is the Global Underground CD Release Party for Nubreed DJ Jim Rivers. I highly suggest getting there very early so you can be sure of no problems getting in of course. :D

Rob makes excellent points here. First of all, the guestlist said it was free before 3:00 and $20 after. It also said to get there early to avoid waiting to get up to the roof. All the different lists (Compression email and FB, Chemistry email and FB, etc) said this in some capacity or another.
Everybody who is in the LA scene knows that this party is hugely popular, yet they all assume they can show up "fashionably" late and waltz in like it's a Saturday night club along the lines of Avalon or Vanguard.
Bottom line: Don't show up at 6:30 for an event that started at 1:00 and ended at 9:00.
Oh, and Rob, way to rock the Boom Box shirt! Looking forward to your set @ Audit 5/29! |

yes, its gonna be rocking!
I don't want to make anyone feel bad about not getting in. I just want to reinforce that its a good idea to get there early though, just in case. Plus its a good way to support the earlier djs who, in a lot of cases, are just as good and sometimes better than our headliners.
(local love!)

Thanks Rob for responding! That's really what I love about the compression parties - it's a personal thing, run by a cool group of people, for a great crowd and even better music.
For me it was no biggie - I just couldn't get there any earlier than 6:30 and I was lucky in that I could make other plans locally until 8pm so it didn't phase me and I had a good time (even if the good music stopped at 9pm).
All I was saying that there were a lot of pissed off people down there and according to them they'd seen a steady trickle of people leaving for a couple of hours and were suddenly allowed up at a designated time. It think people were just confused and security there wasn't helping.
Not that it's any fault whatsoever of compression - people complaining in the lobby just were discussing it smelled a bit like the sort of Bull that SBE venues pull all the time to try to make them feel exclusive (you know, door guys letting hardly anyone in even though the club is empty etc.)
Anyway, I had a great time, the music was spot on and met some good peeps. Can't ask for more.....
......but hell yeah I'm gonna get there early for for Mr Rivers!!!! :eyes:
That's going to be one to remember.....or not  |

Security eventually caught on. I left the venue around 7:00 and the security guard at the rooftop elevator door cut my wristband and said, "no more ins and outs." I'm speculating here, but I think the capacity issue was partially due to that security guard using a counter to count the people coming up the elevator, but not counting the people leaving. |

that's a good point. I'll be sure to make an effort to tell them to double check that next time.
I'd hate for that to be our single point of failure.
thanks for pointing that out.

You have to make it for the next one - good, quality grooves from pioneering DJ's and probably one of the best crowds in LA. Very friendly, all up for it.

+1. The difference when you take the speakers away and the following DJ plays is staggering. Makes a big difference. |
