Those who monitor with a sub... always on, or only for reference?

| Just curious as to if everyone here who produces with a sub leaves it on throughout the process, or do you leave it off and just turn it on for an occasional reference, or for mixing the sub-bass? |

| random. i dont trust the results when using my sub but it gives me more pleasure when producing so its abit hard. also i havent found the right settings on crossover+gain on my sub so it sometimes are so low i cant hear it but when turning it of, somethings gonne. it gives the feeling on not only bass but also size of the sound imo. |

I think what palm means to say is that he doesnt trust the sub being on for mixing purposes. When you turn off your sub you lose the "bigness" of the sound.
i like using my sub during production until i get to the mixdown.
When you mixdown you should do it with the sub off and then after u have a nice frequency balance u should turn your sub on and mix your bass frequencies with EQ or multiband compression (usually 200hz and below). |

| i mix and produce with hifi pc speakers that have sub, and reference on my mackies. my ears get fatigued too fast on the mackies to use as my mains. |

| Then Mackies wasn't the right choice for you I'm afraid. |

| Yeah, i'm not sure if i want to sell them and get something else, or get the HRS120 sub thats ment to go with them. |

A sub won't stop the set from tiring your ears. Getting other monitors is definitely the best way to go in such a case. |

| my reasoning was with the sub i wouldnt have to turn them up so loud to 'feel' it. heh. but given that the sub costs about as much as the monitors did, i'll probably just find some cheaper monitors. |

| I personally don't use a sub during any part of the mix. I do go back and listen to things I've made through my AKG 701's but no sub woofer here. I declined to get the one that is available with my monitors. (HS80M's)....Love both my monitors and headphones. The AKG's are mind blowing. |

I have the matching genelec sub but I usually use it as a reference if the work is bass heavy. I don't use it during the production or most of the mixing for that matter. just a tool I use as a last quality control check.
Personally the use of a sub is very dependant on the size of your room. I don't see the point in using one if you are working in a small bedroom. |

| Always on - in part because my monitors aren't the very best and tend to be more accurate with the sub, but I also use headphones to make sure both headphone and monitor mixes sound as similar as possible. |
