Pros: Delivers room filling sound and can be ruthlessly honest. They can absolutely create hatred for MySpace Player streams and utter disdain for YouTube... |
Going pretty off-topic, but I wonder whether listening to low quality audio so much, plus the awful overcompression on lots of music, is causing people to care less about the quality of what they hear.
Sometimes it seems like people these days care more about simply having lots of stuff than they do about the actual quality of the stuff. |
Oops! Posted before I typed.
Anyhoo, I can't stand these things and wanted to take the opportunity to explore such a topic without thuroughly derailing a thread in the Production Forum. |

Myspace and youtube needs to be low quality, if they went 192+ its game over, i dont think that has got anything to do with decreasing quality of music either. If you really want to hear a tune more than once you would want a good quality version of it. |

I understand what you're saying, and agree somewhat. Look at what's happened with Comcast. At higher bit resolutions, more bandwidth will be consumed and it's just not feasible.
If a producer is looking for general exposure myspace and YouTube are feasible options that allow for a huge audience and, you're right, people who are interested in a better quality version are going to track down the higher quality stuff.
Unfortunately, I still think there's room for improvement. There are file-hosting services and even one's own website (as you obviously know) which can distribute higher quality versions. While myspace may be a vehicle, I don't think it's a "good" vehicle and while I concede that there are people who are attenuated to the difference between high quality and lower quality resolutions, I also think that most people are willing to put up with the acceptable level of mediocrity and do without higher quality versions.
Every time I read a high play-count next to a song on a myspace player, I wonder how many of those are just people tuning in to hear one of their favorite songs (and sometimes I even wonder why people would like such a song). Sometimes it's just bad marketing that's being employed. There are no links to higher quality versions or a store where they may be obtained. It just is.
I also think part of my problem is GIGO - that people who use myspace to promote their music aren't taking the time with their mixes they could be and Garbage In... Garbage Out. But is that because they're conditioned to put up with it? |

You can use the beatport player instead, then you have links to higher quality and store where they may be obtained.
Myspace streams in 22 khz samplefreq.. in other words the highest reproduced frequency is 11 khz. Thats the main reason why the quality sucks on myspace players. (22 khz, 96 kbps)
Youtube can be good quality if u want. fmt=18 or fmt=22. |

Sometimes. I think a lot of it has to do with the user catching up with the technology and, even with HQ YouTube, I've heard some pretty crappy sounding mixes - and a lot of that can be attributed to the ever present loudness war. |

You can use Audiojelly they provide the best quality of all download portals.
I think its more the point that myspace is suppose to be bad quality, its suppose to be irritating.. so you will go and get the music in good quality. Although i think the myspace player is more than enough to judge how good a track is.
Generally the actuall quality of the music isnt really that important to most people, if they like the music they will listen to it in crappy quality.
I even had a friend who asked me to rip a track from youtube so he could put it on his mp3 player. :wtf: |

Now that's what I call desperation. :p
I aced the myspace player and I use an xspf player that streams the songs from my website's server instead. I set these up for the singers that I work with, but they ended up taking them down because other people couldn't add their songs to their myspace players. The song-sharing ability is really the only benefit I can see in the myspace player. It is pretty cool to go to someone else's myspace page and hear your song playing (albeit in crappy myspace quality). |

I personally don't really care that much about the sound-quality on the music on MySpace. Sure, I'm a man who appreciates to listen to music in good quality. But I see MySpace mainly as a service for showcasing artists. As mentioned, if I want to hear the tracks in full quality, I buy it. I think it's perfectly alright as it is. But sure, if it was better quality on there it wouldn't hurt of course. |
