I use a 1% solution of hydrogen peroxide. You can get it anywhere, Walmart, CVS. I use an ear syringe to put the hydrogen peroxide is my ear. I guess that's what you call it, it's a rubber bladder with a pointy end, that you squeeze to suck up liquid or squirt it out. Let the peroxide stay in your ear for about 3 minutes. It fizzes so can get quite loud. It neutralizes ear wax. After that, I wash my ears out with warm water, using the syringe again. Then I put straight alcohol into my ears, to dry out the water.

You can also buy the ear cleaning kits, usually labeled "wax softener". I only use those when I get a totally clogged ear, which has happened only once.

Speaking of which, I'm due for a good ear cleaning.

Wouldn't it be dangerous to put alcohol in your ears?

You probably shouldn't clean your ears at all. Most of the methods available have a (small) risk of damage. Ear candling in particular can damage your hearing badly if something goes wrong. Why do you want to clean them anyway? Is your hearing dull at the moment?

The best way to clean your ears is by using chewing gum. The chewing action naturally breaks up, softens and cleans the wax.

Extremely? Errrr...no. It's only dangerous if you jab them in there but how often does that happen? Let's not go overboard here.

I used q-tip once, went so far in that it popped out on the other side.

Ears aren't really something you should need to clean other than just a general cleaning with a wash cloth. Your ears automatically push the excess wax out. The wax inside your ear protects it so it is a really bad idea to get rid of it. And a ktip will just push the wax deeper.

LOL..I doubt the candling people want customers to hear that.

Some people do have conditions that lead to wax buildup, especially as they get older. After a long enough time period they can be mostly deaf.

It's best to consult a doctor about these things.

No, it's not dangerous to put rubbing alcohol or peroxide in your ears, so long as you don't have a perforated eardrum or anything like that. Check with a Doc if you aren't sure. Have you ever used swimmer's ear? There's alcohol is that. Some doctors will tell people to use straight alcohol in their ears after swimming, if they have a real problem with ear infections.

My whole family has used the peroxide and alcohol method for years, on the advice of family physicians. That method has kept my left ear from clogging up ever again. This is the method I use. I lean my head to the side, squirt the peroxide in, and let it fizz for about 3 minutes per ear. Then I fill the syringe with warm water, and squirt that in each ear to wash away the loose wax. After that, I squirt some alcohol in my ears.

Here's some wiki instructions, minus the warm water and alchol.

I just cleaned my ears and a big hunk of wax fell out of my left ear. I probably waited too long to clean them. I usually do it about every 3 months.

My dad goes to the doctor and they blast the wax out of his ear with a high pressure water sprayer. I guess wax buildup runs in the family. I've had it since I was in my late 20's.

I use the tip of a safety-pin and carbolic acid diluted with acetone and isopropyl alcohol.

It hurts like hell and gets a little fizzy as the carbolic acid tends to have an endothermic reaction with the acetone, but it gets the job done. ;)

Actually, I rinse it in the shower and use Q-tips with rubbing alcohol.

No Left Turn
Q-tips are the worse thing you can put into your ears. They're only supposed to be used to clean the outer part of your ear. When you put them into your ears, you're only making things worse by pushing the wax buildup further into your ears (as one of the first posters already said).

I use Debrox to clean out my ears every few weeks, which is basically what your primary doctor will use as well. The only difference is that the doc has a fancier hose to flush out your ears. I wouldn't necessarily say that I can hear better after I clean out my ears, but they sure as hell feel a lot better afterwards.
