Yet another 'Telescope' Remix

I want to get my remix reviewed so I can improve it before this forum is swamped with them. I'm sure everyone is finishing up their version by now lol.

I'm just trying to improve my technique and skills with this remix, I'm not aiming to impress anyone. I hope to get some helpful feed back, the things I'm really concerned about are.

1. The whole mix being too bassy
2. Bassline being too loud.
3. Electric pianos being too muddy and clogging up the mid frequences.

you can preview at MySpace Player (128k)(in all it's compressed glory) or go to the download links below

A few recommendations:

Really good beginning. For a while, I thought you'd kicked my ass with your version (and you still could). Except it went on a little long.

The vocals ought to be one of the loudest (apart from the Kick Drum and Bass) instruments in the track. At one point, I heard some sibilance which means you might want to get yourself a de-esser (Spitfish is free if you don't already have one). You also might want to run the vocals through a bit of compression in order to even them out. If they're fading in and out because you're riding the fader, please stop. The echo, I thought, was a bit much and cluttered the mix, all-the-more. The timing, on the echo seemed a little skewed and I had problems making out the lyrics.

The object of the game, when producing vocal tunes, is for the producer to get and stay the out of the way while the vocalist is singing. You might try running the vocals only and bringing up the instruments around them (from - infinity) until they barely begin encroaching on her presence in the mix. Then EQ the portions of the instruments down in order to accommodate them.

You have a lot of good sonic ideas and fairly good melodies running through there, but they sounded very cluttered. It sounds like it could be timing issues, meaning the audio/MIDI hasn't been properly quantized.

It did sound a little boomy (but not muddy) and you might be able to get more mileage from your drums and bass-line by shelving the bass. You also, if you haven't already, might try utilizing a bit of unison layering by incorporating another instrument to play mid-range with the bass-line.

Hey thanks for this, I did work a bit on this so any thing I can hang my hat on I will lol. Not sure I can beat yours though, it's quite good.

Yea, the vocals and their timing has been a PITA for me. I can't quite put my finger on why it's a huge problem for me. Probably when I cut off the silence in the beginning of the vocals I may have undone the timing. Probably taking out some of the fx/stutter/echos would help

thanks for this tip, I'll work on this a bit in the future.

No sweat. And I'm still learning, myself.

RE: Vocals and their timing - what I did was lay out the vocals, before I put anything else down, and then produced around them. They are a little esoteric, as far as their placement goes, so building up to and around them was tricky for me (among others from reading the thread in PS forum), too but it can be done.

The first remix I ever made was with vocals and my ambition in conjunction with the fact that only wet vocals were provided ensured a complete train-wreck. It was for a contest and actually got a couple of votes but the winner used far less of the vocal material than I did and had over 60, the last time I checked.

Music as is with all art, I don't think anyone stops learning :)

i think you should get rid of that bassline and start another one, it's too bassy. the beginning with the 2 basses and lead sound kind of messy to me because it feels like there is too much going on. first note of the piano was really loud when it first shows up in the song. the arrangement doesn't really transition well from one phrase to the next.

For the past week or so I've been tinkering with the bassline, I'll see what happens when I get back into it. It's one of the things I've been worried about since I've started the track lol, the piano I'm gonna definitely work on.

I wish people actually reviewed my mix like ya'll are reviewing my track heh.
