i don't know if this was a joke, but this is so not true. excluding the mainstream/pop side of things i would say only the biggest house artists make this amount, i doubt many of the big trance artists even make this much with their tracks. house seems to sell a lot better, but i'm sure even there for every top selling track there's thousands of tracks that don't sell anything.
in trance i think over 75% of artists only sell 10-250 copies, which results an income between 5-125 euros. so unless you make a hit track every month or about 15-20 non-hit tracks, there's not really any way you can make a living with producing only. |

I think once you start pumping out hits more and more peeps may take interest in your previous work or subsequent efforts, therefore possibly exponentially increasing your earning power... unless all your collection is easily accessible from torrentz.
I read that in today's environment artists don't really make crap on track sales - it's the concerts/gigs/commercial use that are revenue generators. Now, if you're a big star, it's a different deal. But for your average indie / small-timer you best hang on to your day job.
Heck, last NIN album was given for free online (even in super hi-def). I'm sure Trent can afford to do something like this but still... the model is changing, RIAA is a dying beast and it knows it - that's why you see last gasps of desparate animal. Overall, I think entire model is flawed but hey.. considering one can potentially steal a soft synth online and make a track on relatively cheap computer - cheapens the whole experience, therefore piping out revenue to virtually 0. Unless you have a cross-genre mass appeal for example - previously unknown "One Republic" became an overnight sensation after Timbaland moaned "Eh eh eh" on their mediocre track. The rest is history.
