Everybody rips off everyone else.
That's just how the video game industry is.

Sony just unveiled their new Eye Toy...
It uses a wireless controller, similar to the Wiimote, but looks like its 100x better!

Heheh I love how when the Wii was first announced and released all Sony and MS could ever muster up is "This is just a worthless gimmick for casuals. We're hardcore. bla bla bla. It's just a fad that will die out soon"
This is why neither of those companies will ever be known as innovators, in any industry. These "camera interfaces" are just gimmicks with no real, practical use in the video gaming industry. |

I beg to differ. Nintendo has always been and will be a pioneer in the industry. From being the first ones to add shoulder buttons, joysticks, rumble on their controllers and also come out with the innovative wii-mote, other companies will do many things similar to imitate them. |

lol.
xbox is years ahead in online gaming. this may seem like just a gimmick but who knows, it's a fun thing to try.
obviously they are going to have sensors that will differentiate between players, they will also have the option of playing off the couch without moving. |

I don't think this has ever been the vision of Xbox.
Xbox hardware is "hardcore", yes (the processor design still is a great deal ahead of it's time [no RROD comments pls, those have been fixed with a generous warranty] and has at least 3 years left before it is due for an update).
HOWEVER, Microsoft's vision for the Xbox 360 has always been to create the "entertainment hub" of the house.
Xbox supports Netflix, it has it's own currency, it offers (non-netflix) movie purchases and rentals, it offers exclusive video and online content, it supports messaging and friending, it now supports Facebook and Twitter, it connects with other Windows PCs to stream media from those devices, it now has collaborative gaming (1vs100) and it soon will integrate with Zune to provide more entertainment... Not to mention the gaming and networked gaming functionality.
Natal is just an extension of the entertainment hub concept. It makes it easier for more people in the house to participate in using it - which is never a bad thing.
I'm not even a big gamer guy - however after buying an Xbox around holiday season I can say that I am really really happy with the unit - it was a great investment. |

Their long term goal has always been to take over the living room but the path they're taking to reach that is through the hard core gamers, who in turn branch out into tech-geeks, audiophiles, etc. The people that play Halo and many of the other Xbox 360 games are the same people that care about 720p, 1080p, Dolby Digital, multi-core processors, etc etc.
The so-called "Hardcore gamers" market which has been defined by MS and Sony the past 2-3 generations has always cared more about technology and conventional (aka. "hardcore") games than new and innovative ideas. That's what I meant when I said MS considered itself hardcore, because they've always tried to cater more-so to the 18-40 Male demographic. Xbox Live was a natural expansion of the Xbox brand to safely capture that audience. Same goes for Netflix.
I agree that Natal's goal is to diversify the audience but I really doubt it will do that. I just don't believe that the technology, however revolutionary it may be, will be applied well enough for the Natal to be a mass market hit. That is, unless they include it with every new Xbox 360 sold, as well as a collection of fun and addictive games. Then maybe it could work.
I'm not trying to knock on MS because in reality they've done everything right to be successful in this industry. It's really been a text book that business students should study. I'm just skeptical about the Natal and it's future. |

true. but the virtual boy was ahead of its time but never caught on and was never a big hit. the rest you listed werent meant to be ground breaking nbut just different mediums for their platforms. the gamecube i dont think was a flop, it was more a sidestep, nothing too forward but still advanced the company. it set up the invention of the wii.
the n64 graphic add on wasnt meant to shock the world but increase the user experience. and it did when playing perfect dark!
also, n64 cartridges lost some of nintendos development base but still held its ground whe playstation was created. it did a lot better than people expected when compared to playstation. |
