Before trance?

Since i'm pretty sure most of you didn't start out listening to trance when you were kids. What did you listen t before becoming a trancehead, and how did you become interested in it. This could be interesting since in general, at least in america, electronica isn't generally played on the radio.

For me, the first electronic song I heard was Robert Miles - Children (dreams version). I stumbled upon a MIDI of this back in the days of mIRC when I downloaded a mIRCscript with it. I was only about 12 at the time, but I loved it, and went out and got Dreamland. This cd was amazing, but at the time I had no clue what genrea it was, and could not find anything else like it.

Years later the movie hackers came out. I remember hearding Hacyon + on + on, and loving it. I got the OST, then the second, and third soundtrack for it. (funny, 1 movie, three soundtracks). This sparked my interest in electronic music in general, although it wasn't until several years later when I met a friend who happend to be a party kid that I really go interested in trance.

As for what I listened to beforehand, well, I started out at pop when I was really young, then very quickly moved on to rock, punk, alternative and metal. None of these phases lasted very long, and so far Trance is the only thing that i've ever heard that can keep my attention for long.

Before Trance I mainly listened to rap. I still listen to some rap now, but it's mostly trance.:eyes:

Well ive bought my first cd-player at the age of 10. Thats now about 10 years ago. Well and my first cd ive bought was Techno trax. It is a cd compilation that was sold in germany. On the cd where tracks like Holy Noise - James Brown is Still Alive, U96 - Das Boot, Mig-29 - Mig 29 (This track is awesome, it still catching me!!) And another golden oldie Human Resource - Dominator.

After that cd ive bought here in the netherlands the House Party Compilation series. Also this serie was a complete success. It was a compilation of club/techno/dance. On the cd stood about 50 tracks that where mixed. You could expect tracks like: The Ultimate Seduction - Housenation, N.U.K.E. - nana, Charly Lownoise - Speedcity etc. I was there about the age of 11 / 12. After that ive bought some hardcore cd's but it wasn't interesting enough. So Ive started to buy series like Trancemaster and sort of cd's.

As you can see ive allways like the dance/trance scene. And i still like it. Some new tracks of old dance covers is nice to hear, it remebers of the time when I was young. Well sometimes I listen now to R&B and Soul but it's just music for some special evenings :). You must think of cd's like R.Kelly and The Isley Brothers. And sometimes I grab my dads cd's which have some relaxing tunes on it. Like Enigma and Enya and sort of stuff.

For me the first electronic track ever was Kraftwerk - Radioactivity, it was on a tape my parents had bought years before. I started listening to house music when I was 13, my first CD was Turn Up The Bass House Party 1, featuring classics such as Rubb It In, The Tape, Quadrophonia and Total Confusion. I still listen to it now. In fact I haven't stopped listening to house music since then. When I was 15 I bought my first hardcore CD called Rave The City 1. I remember when I first listened to it I thought "my god, what kind of rubbish is this? this isn't music, it's noise!" However, there was something in that music that kept me hooked and it became my favourite genre until say 1998. In the meanwhile I was a more or less regular visitor of hardcore parties such as Thunderdome, Speedrazor and Mysteryland, going nuts at tracks produced by names such as Ruffneck, G-Town Madness, Rotterdam Terror Corps and PCP. I still enjoy listening to gabber every once in a while. When hardcore became more minimal and minimal in 1998 you could notice the movement had its best time behind it. I found myself in some kind of vacuum, because there was no music (except for the classic old school house that I have always loved) that could really interest me. All that changed when hearing System F's Out Of The Blue. I immediately became addicted to trance and it is my favoutite genre until now. In the meanwhile I also started listening to techno and progressive with much pleasure, so I dare say that in the end I have developed quite a broad taste as far as house music is concerned.

I've listened to eurodance for years until 2000. My adventure with trance started when I watched PVD's For An Angel video on Viva tv. It was in 1999, but I wasn't as much into Internet as now so I didn't know about all trance mp3s. I've become a trancEaddict in early 2000, when my friend lent me a cd with some PVD mp3s on it (from Seven Ways album) and that was the moment I got into trance. Then I found napster and download trance tracks with it, and and and...
There is one thing I still don't understand. I've known about TA website since 2000 and I've dl mp3 from here, but I don't know why I've register in this board so late (in Jan 2002)??
Oh, I guess I wil never know the answer...

Strangely, Hackers kicked it off for me too, Orbital - Halycon, on & on was so awesome.
But I mainly listened to pop for 96-98 (before that was Offspring/Nirvana, and before that, Snoop and Warren G) but around the ass-end of 98, we got winamp, and my brother made me listen to one little track.

Binary Finary - 1998 (PvD)

Shivers went up my spine and that was that :D

Rap... I was a rap junky before it became all poppy and commercial. But around the middle of 1999, I just had enough of rap (and all of the stigmas attached to listening to it) and I bought my first mix CD... Bad Boy Bill - Bangin the Box 3. Hard House :). But then I downloaded some "techno" and really got hooked. I DL'd something called "TECHNO - DJ Tiesto - Live @ Amsterdam - Magik VI" That's where my love of trance started. :)
