Paul Kalkbrenner's live setup

I went to see him play live last night, got a chance to talk to him a bit and take pictures. He didn't have time to answer all of my questions so I wondered if you guys knew a bit about live gear and everything related.
Paul uses:
1) Ableton Live on Mac
2) 16 channel external mixer
3) Evolution midi controller
4) 2 soundcards
Here are the pictures I took and a video I shot (sorry for the crappy sound I was standing next to the return speaker)

Now my question is: why would he have two soundcards when Ableton Live can only manage one at a time? My guess is that he needs both to get stereo on all 16 or so channels as one soundcard doesn't have that many outputs. But how does he manage to get each Ableton track routed into 2 soundcards??? |

Mac can create composite audio devices or something. Use ASIO4all on PC.
but I don't know why he doesn't just buy a bigger sound card. I'd say he wasn't able to afford it before and now is just using this because its comfortable. Not really a critical part of his sound.
I thought he also had a novation keyboard at one point..? |

That's correct. Mac has the ability to create aggregate audio devices built into the operating system. You can combine as many audio devices as you want and make them appear as a single audio interface to any applications that use them. Pretty cool. |

Hi guys maybe one of you could help me out here.
How does Paul sends 16 soundchannel from ableton to his mackie mixer? Is that the thing with the soundcards or what or does he use an audiointerface with 16 lineouts?
I hope you could help me!
Thanks! |

| Since there is no information on the audio interfaces he is running, one would assume that he is running 2 audio interfaces with a minimum of 8 outputs each. |

This thread is from over a year ago, and you're wrong.
FF UFX would be a lot better than 2 400s, and a lynx, lavry, SSL would be better than an RME. He has an inneficient setup. |
