Recommend a Sound Mangling Delay Plugin
View this Thread in Original format

I'm looking at (and will be demo'ing) the U-He MFM2 and OhmBoyz delay plugins and I'm just wondering if anybody here has used them and what your opinions are. I'm looking for something that goes well beyond your typical delay (I've got plenty of those already) and offers me some sound mangling features (e.g., modulation, filters, FX, etc.). If you have used both, I'd really like to know which one you prefer and why. Also, are there any others that I should consider?

BTW - I'm only looking to buy one, so even though I realize that they aren't exact equals, buying both is not an option right now. I'm looking for the one that will give me the most versatility and bang for my buck. Thanks!

Add Fabfilter Timeless 2 to your list.

If you want sound mangling, you want sugar bytes efectrix/reaktor/dblue glitch.... I assume you've heard of all those ones before though..?

Not sure exactly what you're after I guess...

ohm boyz ain't bad, but to be honest, if you already own a tape delay, you'll be better off with u-he's mfm, as mangling is truly an option with it.

Soundtoys

They are by far the best vst effects i have ever heard. Im suprised they arn't mentioned more around here. Just try their 14 day free demo. Mindblowing imo

Aren't they mac only? That could be why they aren't mentioned more.

Thanks farris! I gave that demo a go, but it's quite a bit more limited than the others and quite a bit more expensive than MFM2.

Hey kit - I've got effectrix and glitch, but they aren't what I'm looking for. I'm looking for an advanced delay plugin with a bunch of features for twisting, bending, warping, degrading, etc. the delayed signal.

Good question. From the Soundtoys website:

quote:

RTAS Audio Units AudioSuite VST...Requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later, Windows XP/Vista (Must comply with Pro Tools compatibility)

Not sure what they mean by complying with PT compatibility, but at $495 :eyes: , I don't think I need to know. EchoBoy alone is $349! For a relatively basic delay?! Uh...no thanks.

I played with the MFM2 demo for a while yesterday and, yeah, it really is a crazy plugin and the price ($79) is unbelievable. It's definitely a deep plugin and will actually require some reading of the manual to really get into the depths of it. Ohmboyz sounds decent and has some great options, but MFM2 is deeper, has better features IMO, and is cheaper. So, I'm definitely leaning toward MFM2, but am open to other suggestions. Thanks for the input so far, guys!

I think that is a very cheap price for the whole bundle and the quality of what you get. You get 7 plugins. Filterfreak is the best filter plugin ever made. Echoboy is actually quite complex and can also emulate nearly every vintage delay. The sound is somewhat comparable to high-end eventide processors and is made by the same team that developed eventide's flagship H3000 model. Crystalizer is based and heavily built upon the awesome crystals algo in the h3000 and can produce awesome reverbs, reverse delays, pitch shifting, granular mayhem etc etc.

Just try the demo, i almost guarnatee you will buy them.

I would try them but they don't support my old version of Ableton Live.

Hey, I know the SoundToys stuff is a bit expensive, but don't judge it by specs alone. The EchoBoy is definitely an outstanding delay. I've used it for a bit and I thought it was just about the best delay I have used in some time. It just "fits" in the mix. Its not going to be sound mangling, but it does have that nice "Space Echo" type of sound to it. Completely different from other plugins in it's class. The other plugins in the bundle aren't mindblowing, but they are definitely strong plugins in a "utility" sort of sense. I can understand not wanting to drop $500 on a plugin bundle, but the bundle is worth the money, IMO. The demo is 30 days, so give it a shot if you get a minute.

+1. We used the Echoboy as the delay of choice at work. You have no idea how many major film projects have soundtoys all over them.

They are really great plugins and can be as simple and as complex as you want.

A lot of the Ohmboyz stuff is what norman cook used on "between the gutter and the stars". Think of the funk soul brother breakdown.....
