Drums/Synth volume issue

This question is probably rubbish and has a very easy answer but I'm stumped. Whenever I make nice sounding drums in Reason 4, I make sure it's the loudest or at least very noticeable in the mix. Then I make a synth padline, and when I bring the drums back the synth is barely making any noise. It's loud when solo and then it's just like a soft mumble when the drums kick in.
I want to know how I can make it so when the synth and drums play together it sounds normal and it doesn't go from loud to soft.
Any ideas? |

Do you have any master compression/ limiting over the mix? That could be one reason that the drums drown out the other elements. Try removing all master processing and dropping the levels of everything by a lot and see if it's still happening at low volume levels.
If it is still happening at very low levels, it's likely a frequency clash. I'd suggest choosing different drums or a different pad, depending which is more important to the overall sound you're going for.
Otherwise, you could try shaping the pad - if it's not completely the wrong sound, you might be able to use filters/ EQ to remove the low frequencies that might be clashing with the kick.
Or you could be using less than optimal drum samples, and not shaping them well. Maybe you're using a snare with a lot of low end/ low mids, and you have it set quite loud to make it cut through, but you haven't removed all the lows/ low mids and they're interfering with the pad's frequencies. Have the pad playing, then bring the other sounds in one by one, see if a particular sound is causing the pad to drop out. |

| posting samples would help a lot |

As mentioned above.. post a sample for a good answer.. In the mean time try compressing your pad and also keep the low end off it so it doesn't clash with your kicks frequencies.
Hope that helps a little
