| I think I read in an interview somewhere that desyn masiello didn't break out till he was kind of older, at least years older than 23. It ain't too late |

Thanks for all the replies (serious or not (I'll look into that ironic Commadore 64 shirt :p)) and advice! Like I said, I'm not looking to become famous, but I would love to play in a decently sized venue because dance music makes me happy: I love the energy that it gives off and I love the feeling of a whole crowd caught in the moment of a great track, just groovin' like no one cares.
I didn't mention production because I am not ready for that stage yet. I wanted to toy around with DJing first so I can learn how to properly beat-match and really understand the aspects of EDM before I attempt to flood the market with my own stuff, because god knows there is enough ty tracks out there.
I dunno if I break out a mix in four weeks! I'm full time in summer classes and I think I'll take an extra class in audio production this fall (even though its not in my major. Can't hurt, right?) |

| If DJing is what you want to do then go ahead and do it, but if it's just an easy excuse for what you think will be a way to make some quick cash, then don't bother. |

you.
"Well, once I get good I should get paid, right?" No. off with that attitude. Once you "get good" you should continue doing it whether or not you get paid, so long as you enjoy doing it. You should be doing it because you love to do it, because you love the feeling of putting together a set that has impeccable transitions/flow, because you love the feeling of watching the floor fill up with dancers as you spin. To feel as though you should be paid because you enjoy doing something is horse . |

He said he would like to get paid for something he enjoys, as opposed to getting paid for doing a job he doesn't like. He wasn't implying that once he got good he could demand payment. |

Doctors should work for free, cause you know, they enjoy saving lives. Firemen should work for free, they enjoy saving lives. Basketball Players should play for free, they love playing ball. Ballet dancers should dance for free, they enjoy dancing. All artists should be end up homeless bums or work part time bagging grocieries, because their passion for the music is enough. Do you need a better picture drawn of how ignorant what you are saying is? Not to mention how pretentious it is?
Lets get off the crazy idea that DJing and Producing = Charity. Just because said people enjoy doing what they are doing, does not mean they should'nt get compensated for their work, regardless of their passion. Working for free, categorically results in lower standards and lower quality work in the longrun. There is a site called Beatport, you should check it out for some examples of this phenomenon. |

I know how to read. It was implied, at least to me, that he feels that once he's good, he should be paid.

Brilliant, lets start comparing doctors to DJs now.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I'm not saying that people shouldn't be compensated at all. I'm simply saying that artists shouldn't expect to be compensated once they reach a certain "level of quality" as this guy thinks. I'm also fully aware of what's on Beatport as I spend a significant amount of time digging through all of the bull on it.
Really? Getting compensated results in a higher-quality of music? Need I go on a rant about selling out, pop music, top 40, etc.? Do you have any idea how many artists played for free and for how long they did so before they even started to make money, then went on to end up headlining huge festivals? Yeah, they must not've been any good when they were playing for free if that's where they've ended up. |

Why cant we compare other professions? I didn't change the equation. Given that your pop music example, is cheap...are you really going to debate against a rather simple idea, that the quality of work done is very much dependent on the compensation of those doing the work? Would you cross bridge built by profesional engineers, who are paid well, or cross a bridge built by some poorly conceived team that volunteered to work for free?

I still dont understand, how you think a DJ or a Producer (since they seem to be doing things for free these days), even if he is passionate, should follow the horse above. Even the DJs that played for free for a while, they likely were investing in getting some recognition to build a means for income in the future once they got up. What you are clearly saying is they should'nt even think about that, because of some fairytale bs. I dont think a single DJ out there follows your line of reasoning without some qualifying factors like people who have regular full time careers already, or some other major source of income. In that case, DJn for charity or for fun is great, if those things are in line. As someone unknown at the moment, I would not mind DJn for free on occassion, because I want to make people dance, but again what your saying is ridiculous for someone who actually wants to DJ for a long time, or create a career around it. |
