Still laughing at the word "rave"?

What else do you call an all ages event going all night serving no alcohol, and playing edm? It's just the stigma that rave is such a lame e-tard word isn't it?
It's funny my local edm message board used to be at raversnet.com, but of course a few years down the road, any time any newbie came on and said the word rave he was laughed at/made fun of. Get over it
I will admit that it is rare that anything resembling a rave happens these days, but when put on by small promoters and meeting the conditions I mentioned above, I don't see how it could be anything else. In fact I'm going to a rave tonight!

The term rave goes way back to the 1960s well before EDM parties and it's nowhere near being an "all ages event serving no alcohol". As a matter of fact, alcohol and drugs (mainly ecstasy) were a huge part of what made a rave a rave, not to mention their illegal status. You should really learn about what you're talking about before doing so. ;)

I don't see why I'm so wrong. Every rave I've been to was packed with ecstasy and alcohol, and whatever else people want to ingest. If they served alcohol then it would obviously be law abiding and legal in that sense. The party being illegal? Sure, the party I'm going tonight, nobody is actually renting the land we're partying on. Can I call it a rave yet? Or am I still somehow not being true to the old skool mindset of the early rave scene when everything was so fresh and underground?

If the term origininated in the 60's, then what were these raves like back then? What kind of music did they play, if edm had not been invented yet? Was there ecstasy there seeing as how if had not been discovered yet? Please enlighten me.

edit: Alright according to wiki, you're not so wrong, but not so right.

In the late 1980s, the word "rave" was adopted to describe the subculture that grew out of the acid house movement. [3] Activities were related to the party atmosphere of Ibiza, a Mediterranean island frequented by British and German youth on vacation.[1] The fear that a certain number of rave party attendees used "club drugs" such as MDMA, cocaine, amphetamines and, more recently, ketamine, was taken by authorities as a pretext to ban those parties altogether.

In late 1950s London, the term "rave" was used to describe the "wild bohemian parties" of the Soho beatnik underground.[4] The word was later used in the burgeoning mod youth culture of the early 1960s as the way to describe any wild party in general.

There you have it. So what are the "rules" to make a rave a rave in the current sense? Words definitions obviously evolve over time, so bringing up the 60's here seems irrelevant.
I think everyone is too jaded to even have the spirit of a rave anymore. Especially with the "candy ravers are stupid, I'd rather wear my same old jeans and t-shirt to a party rather than having a little fun dressing up/ wearing costume etc" attitude.

It this sums up the way you think...then I'm sorry, we're different. ;)

well first off to base a whole genre of music on the few times you heard it is really prejudgemental, a character trate that is unfortunaly all to common in our world today.
anyway with anything thing in life there's somethings you will enjoy and something that just doesn't do anything for you. the key espeacially with dance music is to keep an open mind and search for your favorite sounds becuase you will find them (in any genre.) i meen look at the tracks getting released today, house or trance they both use such simliar elements that's it's really tough to tell where the influence is coming from or to even put a label on it. the main thing i would suggest to every one is just listen with an open mind, you will always find tracks within a genre that you didn't think you'd like but will actually enjoy them immensely. for example look at how you even got into dance music, i'm sure it wasnt because you liked it a head if time, but you listen and find something that you really enjoy. therefore you cant go wrong by broadening your horizons and enjoying even more out of life (that's the whole piont right?). this way of experiencing and viewing your world can be used on everything through out every aspect of life, trust me its a great way to see the world !!!
AY STAR
i wouldnt judge house music on an overall basis by listenin to guetta
i heard him once for maybe 20 min and i did not enjoy
i listened to a few sets of his and i still did not enjoy, he just does not do it for me

i would suggest listening to roger sanchez,danny tengalia,victor calderone,richie santana,chus n ceballos
