hey guys

i decided to make this thread because i thought u maybe could help me.
so to sum up i got a friend she's french who wants to follow her bf in the states in december.
he got an internship in NYC and she'd like to join him over there and find an internship as well.
but i assume that they will only give you a visa (when you stay longer than 3 months) under the condition you already found your internship or?
do US company easily hire foreign trainees or is it harder when u are not american?
could she just work in a restaurant or something if she doesnt manage to work in her field or is it hard to even apply for a job when u are a foreigner?

and please for the New yorkers here could you tell me where the accomodation price is quite cheap but you still live in a decent SAFE place?
not necessarly in manhattan itself i adviced her brooklyn , queens areas.

infos, advices , links blah blah are welcomed
thank you in advance

About the visa: If she wants to get a visa for an intership, she has to get the job first, because if she comes to the US first, she will not be eligible for work with a tourist visa. For the french, I think they can stay up to 3 months in the country without a visa, but with a tourist status. An option would be to come for 3 months, go back home and then come back so she doesn't lose legal status.

About work: She could work in a restaurant or bar or something like that, although it's not the best industry to work in at the moment. A lot of Wall Street people have become now bartenders and servers (as if all of NYC's actors aren't enough) and people are not spending as much eating out and drinking at bars, so the income is limited in the industry. If this is something she wants to try out, she has to consider that she has to provide proof of eligibility for employment, ie. government-issued ID and a SSN. Some places pay cash, so it will not be reported to the IRS and Social Security Administration. If she decides to use a fake SSC, it would be best if she shoots for jobs that will pay her cash, as she will not be detected and deported. TBH, this sounds a lot more complicated than it really is, but if her intention is to come back to the US later in life if she goes back home, she has to weigh in the pros and cons.

About housing: There's a lot available in BK in areas that used to be shady, but due to gentrification, they are now safe areas and still have great prices. Hot areas right now for rent are Bed-Stuy and Bushwick, where you can get a 1 BR for as low as $1100, and 3 BR for $ 1800 (which is a really good deal if you get roommates).

Hope this helps!
