This is something I know very little about, but came across this interesting thread on the ableton forum
http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=111884
As far as I'm aware, I've not seen this discussed on this forum before.
Your thoughts, opinions? Anybody here mix in mono for the reasons given in the ableton thread? |

Sorry but thats not what I'm refering to.
If you read the ableton thread, the idea is that when you do your mixdown, you mix the whole track listening to it in mono, as apparently, this makes it much easier to identify problems and hear where cuts/boosts need to be made. Then once satisfied, switch back to stereo and make final adjustments. |

The post seems to take aspects of "The mixing engineer's handbook" and "Mixing with your mind".
Sometimes I'll set my levels in mono, at a really quiet master volume. It is a good way to get sounds balanced nicely. I always check my mixes in mono, at very quiet levels, to make sure nothing is overpowering the mix, or gets lost in the mix, and so on. |

Thanks alot G-Con, I never heard of this. I do go to mono sometimes to check for phase cancellation but, never heard of mixing like this. I am for sure going to be trying this out as soon as I get back in the studio:D I am hoping this is gonna fix many problems I have been having, it seems it will. Can't give enough thanks, this is the kind of info that is a big reason why I think all you guys are the best, for pointing it out. I read alot on my own but, I just can't believe that out of all the books and mags that I read, no one ever mentioned something like this. Golden;) |

i usually turn off one of my monitors as well as setting the whole mix to mono, if u can hear everything in the mix at that stage, it should really come to life in stereo |
